The connectors and conditions. Huozhe tells alternatives, haishi asks them, the single most-tested or trap in Chinese. Zhiyao jiu for a sufficient condition, zhiyou cai for a necessary one. Chule yiwai for except or besides. Weile aiming forward at a purpose, yinwei looking back at a cause. And na or name as the conversational then. Each pair locks to its partner word, and the pairs are the lesson.
Huozhe lays out alternatives in a statement, it tells and doesn't ask: kafei huozhe cha dou xing, coffee or tea, both fine. Haishi asks the listener to choose: ni yao he cha haishi kafei, do you want tea or coffee. This is the single most-tested or trap in Chinese, because the moment you want the listener to pick, you must switch to haishi. And one mechanics note: don't repeat shi, shui haishi jiu is right, shui haishi shi jiu is not.
Two condition frames, two doors. Zhiyao means you only need, a sufficient condition where any working door counts: zhiyao ni nuli xuexi, jiu hui you jinbu, as long as you study hard, you'll make progress. It pairs with jiu. Zhiyou means only if, the sole door, a necessary condition: zhiyou nuli, cai neng zuohao gongzuo, only by working hard can you do the job well. It pairs with cai, very often caineng. Lock the pairs together, zhiyao jiu, zhiyou cai, and the condition question answers itself.
Cai between two clauses says the second happened only after, only because of the first. Na ben shu wo kan le liang bian cai kan dong, I only understood that book after reading it twice. This cai spotlights how much it took, the effort or the late hour, and the result clause usually ends in a result complement, kan dong, mai dao, reporting what was finally achieved. It takes no le on its verb, because the effort, not a tidy completion, is the point.
Chule yiwai frames one noun and then points two possible ways. Meaning except: chule ta yiwai, mei ren zhidao, except him, nobody knows, where the following clause is negative. Meaning besides: chule Zhongwen, wo hai zai xue Riyu, besides Chinese I am also learning Japanese, where hai or ye signals addition. The clause after it decides which way the sentence cuts, and yiwai is optional.
Chule yiwai can mean except, besides him nobody knows, or besides, in addition to, and the clause after it tells you which way the sentence heads. Then the purpose-cause split. Weile aims forward at a goal: weile jiankang, wo duanlian, for the sake of health, I exercise, and it usually opens the sentence. Yinwei looks backward at a cause: yinwei wo bing le, suoyi wo xiuxi, because I'm ill, I rest. The le in weile is glued into the word, not the aspect particle.
Na, or the fuller name, picks up what was just said and draws a suggestion from it, that being so. Ta bu ting, na wo yinggai zenme ban, he won't listen, so what should I do. Ni bu xihuan zhege, na women huan yige, you don't like this one, then let's swap it. It opens your reply, reacting to the other person's remark, and it is not suoyi, which states a cause and effect inside one thought. A bare na is most natural in speech, name a touch more formal.
The watch-out is the swap in every sense. Huozhe and haishi never swap, because the moment you want the listener to choose, haishi is the only word. And zhiyao reaches for jiu, so swapping in cai quietly changes the meaning to only-if. Pairs in this topic are locked, and the lock is the answer.
Pause and check both. First, haishi, because the listener is being asked to choose. Second, cai, very often caineng, while zhiyao takes jiu. The remaining review items: kan le liang bian cai kan dong spotlights the effort of two readings, weile fills the health sentence because purpose aims forward, and na reacts conversationally where suoyi concludes. Tell or ask, any door or one door, forward or back: the pairs decide.
