Inference in listening ·
A speaker can revise a plan
- “We could meet at six. Actually, I cannot leave class until six, so let’s meet at half past.” The agreed suggestion is later than the first time mentioned.
- Listening questions can test a final choice or an implied meaning. Decide which the question asks before selecting an answer.
If a meaning is 'implied', it is…
Implied = suggested, not stated openly. ·
Use the whole message
- “That could be difficult” may express a problem or polite reluctance. Listen for the explanation that follows.
- Words, tone and context can support interpretation. A pause alone does not prove one exact feeling.
Where are they? Infer the place ·
Speakers rarely name the place — the props and phrases do it for them.
The exact words a speaker uses always match their real meaning. ·
Not always — listen for what is implied. ·
Check a distractor against the decision
- Wrong multiple-choice options are distractors. An early idea may be mentioned and then rejected or changed.
- Match the answer to the complete statement. Hearing a familiar word is not enough if it belongs to a rejected option.
A speaker says 'I wanted tea, but I had coffee.' They drank… · 说话人说 'I wanted tea, but I had coffee.'
Listen to the whole idea: they had coffee. ·
A wrong option designed to trick you is called a ___.
Distractors are the tempting wrong options. ·
Distinguish setting from certainty
- “Tickets, please” and “mind the gap” can suggest a train setting. “Could we see the menu?” can suggest a restaurant.
- Use combined clues and the provided context. One word alone may fit more than one setting.
Match the spoken line to what it implies. ·
Match the most plausible implied meaning in these brief examples. Actual speech needs tone and surrounding context; an inference is not a guaranteed hidden fact.
“Tuesday might work. No, I have a match then. Wednesday is free.” Which day is available in the statement?
Tuesday is rejected because of the match. Wednesday is described as free, although an agreement would need the other speaker’s response.
Explain what survived the correction
- In the meeting example, six was proposed but half past six was the replacement. Check whether the other speaker accepts it if the question asks for an agreed plan.
