How long? The ongoing past
- The present perfect continuous shows an action that started in the past and is still going (or just stopped).
- I have been waiting for an hour.
- It focuses on the activity and its duration.
I have been studying for hours; the kettle has been waiting just as long.
多久了?持续的过去
- 现在完成进行时 (present perfect continuous) 表示一个动作从过去持续到现在(可能还在进行,或刚停)。

Form: have been + -ing
- have / has been + verb-ing.
- She has been studying. They have been working.
- Short forms: I've been …, she's been ….

for and since
- for + a length of time: for two hours.
- since + a starting point: since this morning.
- I have been living here for two years.
for 与 since
- for + 一段时间:for two hours。
- since + 起点:since this morning。
- I have been living here for two years.(我在这住两年了。)
Complete: She has been studying ___ nine o'clock. (for / since) · 填空:She has been studying ___ nine o'clock。(for / since)
Nine o'clock is a starting point → since. · nine o'clock 是起点 → since。
Translate into English: 我已经等了一个小时了。 · 翻译成英语:我已经等了一个小时了。
Ongoing duration → have been + -ing: “I have been waiting for an hour.” · 持续到现在 → have been + -ing:I have been waiting for an hour。
Continuous vs simple
- Continuous → the activity / duration: I've been reading (still going).
- Simple → the result: I've read it (finished).
- State verbs (know, like, be) don't take the continuous.
进行 vs 完成
- 完成进行时 → 过程 / 时长:I've been reading(还在读)。
- 完成时 → 结果:I've read it(读完了)。
- 状态动词(know、like、be)不用进行时。
Can this verb be continuous? · 这个动词能用进行时吗?
Action verbs can be continuous; state verbs (know, like, be) cannot. · 动作动词能用进行时;状态动词(know、like、be)不能。
Is this correct? “I have been knowing him for years.” · 这句对吗? “I have been knowing him for years.”
“know” is a state verb — no continuous: “I have known him for years.” · know 是状态动词,不用进行时:I have known him for years。
Common mistakes
- ❌ I am waiting for an hour. → ✓ I have been waiting for an hour. — a length of time needs the perfect.
- ❌ How long are you living here? → ✓ How long have you been living here?
- ❌ She has been finished. → ✓ She has finished. — been only goes with -ing.
常见错误
- ❌ I am waiting for an hour. → ✓ I have been waiting for an hour。—— 带"已持续多久"必须用完成进行时。
- ❌ How long are you living here? → ✓ How long have you been living here?—— how long 问时长。
- ❌ She has been finished. → ✓ She has finished。—— been 后面只能接 -ing。
Put the words in order to make a question. · 把单词排成一个问句。
How long + have + subject + been + -ing: “How long have you been waiting?” · How long + have + 主语 + been + -ing:How long have you been waiting?
You finished three books this week. Is “I have been reading three books this week” the best tense? · 这周你读完了三本书。“I have been reading three books this week” 是最合适的时态吗?
A completed amount → present perfect: “I have read three books this week.” · 报完成的数量用现在完成时:I have read three books this week。
- have / has been + verb-ing = started in the past, still going.
- for + a duration; since + a starting point.
- Focus on the activity, not the finished result.
- have / has been + 动词-ing = 从过去持续到现在。
- for + 时长;since + 起点。
