A page can hold four minutes or forty years
- Pacing 节奏 is the manipulation of time in a text.
- Not the speed of events, but what the text does with the time they take.
- So pacing is always a choice, and it can be pointed at on the page.
A text can spend four pages on one minute and one sentence on a decade; the clock has lodged a complaint.
一页纸可以装下四分钟,也可以装下四十年
- 节奏(pacing)是对文本中时间的操控。
- 不是事件的快慢,而是文本拿它们所占的时间做了什么。
- 因此节奏永远是一个选择,而且可以在书页上被指出来。
文本能用四页写一分钟,却用一句话写十年;时钟都想提出申诉了。
Pacing is defined as... · 节奏被定义为……
A murder can be paced slowly and a walk to the shops fast. · 一场谋杀可以写得很慢,一次去商店的散步可以写得飞快。
Six contributing factors
- The CED lists them: arrangement of details, frequency of events, narrative structures, syntax, the tempo or speed at which events occur, and shifts in tense and chronology.
- Four of the six are things you can quote directly.
- So an analysis of pacing never has to be impressionistic.
六项构成因素
- CED 列出它们:细节的安排、事件的频率、叙事结构、句法、事件发生的速度,以及时态与时间顺序的转换。
- 六项中有四项是你可以直接引用的东西。
- 因此关于节奏的分析,永远不必流于印象式。
Select all · 所有 the pacing factors the CED names. · 选出 CED 点名的所有节奏因素。
Arrangement of details, narrative structures and tempo complete the six. · 细节的安排、叙事结构与速度补全这六项。
Syntax is a pacing device
- This is the factor students never think of, and the easiest to quote.
- Long accumulating sentences slow a passage; a run of short ones speeds it.
- A single short sentence after three long ones stops the reader completely — and that stop is a pacing effect.
句法是一种节奏手段
- 这是学生从未想到、却最容易引用的一项。
- 长而累积的句子让一段文字变慢;一连串短句让它变快。
- 三个长句之后的一个短句会让读者彻底停住——而那次停住,就是一种节奏效果。
Feel a passage change pace · 感受一段文字节奏的变化
Pacing is produced by sentence length, detail density and scene-versus-summary — all observable. · 节奏由句子长度、细节密度以及场景与概述的取舍产生——三者都可观察。
Frequency and tempo differ in that tempo is... · 频率与速度的区别在于,速度是……
One event told slowly and six told quickly can cover the same hour. · 慢讲一件事与快讲六件事,可以覆盖同样的一个小时。
Pacing is not the speed of the events — it is what the text does with the time they take. A murder can be paced slowly and a walk to the shops paced fast. Pointing at the exciting scene and calling it fast-paced describes the plot, not the writing.
**节奏不是事件的快慢——而是文本拿它们所占的时间做了什么。**一场谋杀可以写得很慢,一次去商店的散步可以写得飞快。指着那个刺激的场景说它节奏快,描述的是情节,不是写作。
The pacing factor students never think of, and the easiest to quote, is ____. · 学生从未想到、却最容易引用的那项节奏因素,是 ____。
A short sentence after three long ones stops the reader completely. · 三个长句之后的一个短句,会让读者彻底停住。
Frequency and tempo are different
- Frequency of events: how many things happen per page.
- Tempo: how fast each one is allowed to unfold.
- A page with one event told slowly and a page with six told quickly can cover the same hour.
频率与速度是不同的
- 事件的频率:每页发生多少件事。
- 速度:每一件被允许展开得多快。
- 一页里慢慢讲一件事,与一页里飞快讲六件事,可以覆盖同样的一个小时。
Put the pacing pass in order. · 把节奏检查排序。
This subtopic asks how pacing is made; the next asks what it does. · 本小节问节奏是如何造成的;下一小节问它做了什么。
A pacing pass
- Find the fastest passage and the slowest, and quote a sentence from each.
- Name which of the six factors produced the difference.
- The next subtopic asks what the pacing does to the reader — this one asks how it is made.
节奏检查
- 找出最快和最慢的段落,各引一句。
- 说出是六项因素中的哪一项造成了这一差别。
- 下一小节问节奏对读者做了什么——本小节问它是如何造成的。
Two pages cover four minutes: one long sentence per paragraph, every gesture recorded, tense shifting to the present. Then one sentence covers the following year. The syntax and the shift in tense did that, and both can be quoted — the reader's experience of urgency has a mechanism.
两页写了四分钟:每段一个长句、每个动作都被记下、时态转为现在时。然后一句话写完了接下来的一年。造成这一切的是句法与时态的转换,两者都可以引用——读者对紧迫感的体验,是有其机制的。
Pacing is the manipulation of time in a text. The CED's factors are arrangement of details, frequency of events, narrative structures, syntax, tempo, and shifts in tense and chronology — most of them quotable. Frequency (how many events) and tempo (how fast each unfolds) are different things.
