The chain has an extra link in poetry
- Commentary still explains the logical relationship between the thesis and the claims/evidence.
- In poetry the evidence is often a formal feature, which adds a step: feature → effect → claim → thesis.
- Most weak poetry commentary skips the second link and jumps from feature straight to thesis.
Naming a line break without its effect is pointing at a staircase and refusing to say where it leads.

Feature to effect is the hard link
- The stanza break falls mid-sentence is a feature — checkable, and inert on its own.
- So the reader holds the refusal for a beat before learning its object is the effect.
- The effect must be something that happens to a reader, in a specific place.

It fits any feature and any poem, so it explains none of them. · 它对任何特征、任何诗都成立,因此对它们什么也没解释。

- Creates a sense of isolation is a phrase that fits any feature and any poem.
- If your effect sentence would survive being moved to a different poem, it is not commentary.
- Name what the reader does, knows, waits for, or is denied — those are specific.

Write commentary on a poem · 为一首诗写评注
In a poem the choice is usually small — a word, a line break, a sound — and the commentary is about that choice. · 在诗里,选择通常很小——一个词、一处断行、一个音——评注针对的正是这个选择。
An effect must name something that happens to a ____, in a specific place. · 效果必须点出在某个具体位置上发生在 ____ 身上的事。

"Creates a sense of X" fits every poem, so it explains none. If your effect sentence could be moved into an essay about a different poem without editing, it is filler. Name what the reader specifically does, knows, waits for, or is denied at that point in the text.

- Feature: is it quotable and checkable?
- Effect: does it name something specific that happens to a reader here?
- Claim and thesis: does a sentence connect the effect to each?

Feature: the sentence runs over the stanza break, ending a stanza on "she never." Effect: the reader holds an absolute refusal for the length of a white space before learning what it applies to. Claim: the poem repeatedly makes the reader feel the refusal before its object. Thesis: which is why the poem's tenderness always arrives too late to help.
