Tone has a definition, and it is not "mood"
- The attitude of narrators, characters or speakers toward an idea, character or situation emerges from their perspective and may be referred to as tone 语气.
- So tone is an attitude, held by somebody, toward something specific.
- "The tone is sad" names a feeling; the definition asks whose attitude, toward what.
A speaker may sound cheerful about bad news; the weather in the scene gets no vote on tone.
语气有定义,而它不是"情绪"
- 叙述者、人物或说话者对某一观念、人物或情境的态度,产生于他们的视角,可以被称为语气(tone)。
- 因此语气是某个人对某个具体对象所持的一种态度。
- "语气是悲伤的"说的是一种感受;而定义问的是谁的态度、针对什么。
说话人面对坏消息也可能语气欢快;场景里的天气对语气可没有投票权。
Tone is defined as... · 基调被定义为……
It emerges from perspective and is held by somebody, toward something. · 它源于视角,由某人持有,针对某事。
Tone comes out of background
- Narrators', characters' or speakers' backgrounds and perspectives shape the tone they convey about subjects or events.
- So tone is not chosen freshly for each sentence — it follows from who is speaking.
- A shift in tone therefore signals either a shift in perspective or a change of speaker.
语气出自背景
- 叙述者、人物或说话者的背景与视角,塑造了他们对主题或事件所传达的语气。
- 因此语气不是每句话都重新挑选的——它源自说话的是谁。
- 语气的转变因而标示着视角的转变,或说话者的更换。
Adjectives and adverbs only qualify the things they describe. · 形容词和副词仅修饰其所描述的事物。
They also convey a perspective toward those things — that is the analysable job. · 它们也传达了对那些事物的视角——这就是可分析的任务。
Descriptive words do two jobs
- Descriptive words, such as adjectives and adverbs, not only qualify or modify the things they describe but also convey a perspective toward those things.
- So every adjective is doing double duty, and the second duty is the analysable one.
- A small clerk of a man qualifies the man and reveals the speaker.
描述性词语做两件事
- 描述性词语,如形容词与副词,不仅限定或修饰它们所描述的对象,还传达出对这些对象的一种视角。
- 因此每个形容词都在承担双重职责,而第二重职责才是可供分析的。
- 一个小职员似的人限定了那个人,也揭示了说话者。
Is this a usable tone statement? · 这是一个可用的基调陈述吗?
Sort each by whether it names a holder and an object. · 根据是否指出了持有者和对象对每一项进行分类。
Narrators' ____ and perspectives shape the tone they convey. · 叙述者的____和视角塑造了他们传达的基调。
So a shift in tone signals a shift in perspective or a change of speaker. · 因此,基调的转变标志着视角的转变或说话人的改变。
A tone is an attitude held by somebody toward something. "The tone is sad" names neither the holder nor the object, so it cannot be evidenced. Name whose attitude it is and what it is directed at, and the same sentence becomes checkable against the page.
语气是某个人对某个对象所持的态度。"语气是悲伤的"既没说是谁的,也没说针对什么,因此无法提供证据。说出这是谁的态度、指向什么,同一句话就变得可以对照书页核查了。
Select all · 所有 the parts of a precise tone statement. · 选择 所有 精确基调陈述的组成部分。
The reader's reaction is a different thing from the speaker's attitude. · 读者的反应与说话者的态度是不同的东西。
Naming a tone precisely
- Weak: the tone is negative. Strong: the narrator is impatient with his own sympathy.
- A precise tone word contains an attitude and an object.
- If you cannot name the object the attitude is toward, you have not identified a tone.
精确地命名一种语气
- 薄弱:*语气是消极的。*有力:叙述者对自己的同情感到不耐烦。
- 一个精确的语气词,包含一种态度和一个对象。
- 如果你说不出这态度所针对的对象,你就还没有指认出一种语气。
Match each statement to its verdict. · 将每个陈述与其结论匹配。
Only the third names a holder and an object, so only it can be evidenced. · 只有第三项指出了持有者和对象,因此只有它可以被证实。
A tone pass
- List the adjectives and adverbs in the passage. Circle those that could have been neutral.
- Name whose attitude they convey, and toward what.
- Then look for where the tone changes, and ask whether the perspective or the speaker changed.
语气检查
- 列出这段文字中的形容词与副词。圈出那些本可以是中性的。
- 说出它们传达的是谁的态度,以及针对什么。
- 然后找出语气变化之处,并问是视角变了,还是说话者变了。
"She had, of course, kept every receipt." The adjective work is done by of course: it modifies nothing physical and conveys the speaker's attitude — a weary familiarity with her carefulness. The tone is not "critical"; it is a brother's practised, faintly tired expectation.
*"当然,她把每一张收据都留着。"*起修饰作用的是"当然":它没有修饰任何具体事物,却传达了说话者的态度——一种对她那份细心的疲惫的熟悉。这里的语气不是"批评的";而是一位兄长早已习惯、略带倦意的预期。
Tone is an attitude toward an idea, character or situation, emerging from perspective. Backgrounds and perspectives shape it, so a tone shift signals a change of perspective or speaker. Descriptive words qualify and also convey a perspective — name whose attitude, and toward what.
