Two condition patterns decide what happens next. Zhiyao says one thing is enough, as long as. Zhiyou and chufei name the one thing that must happen, the only way and unless. The exam tests one pairing above all: zhiyao reaches for jiu, while zhiyou and chufei reach for cai. Get the partner word right and the meaning locks into place.
Zhiyao gives a sufficient condition: A on its own is enough to bring B about. Zhiyao ni nuli xuexi, jiu hui you jinbu, as long as you study hard, you'll make progress. Zhiyao yi xiayu, ta xinqing jiu bu hao, whenever it rains, she's in a bad mood, showing the stretch to whenever. Picture a door with a loose lock: one key-turn and it opens. It does not promise the door has no other way in; it promises this one works.
Zhiyou is necessary, not merely enough: without A, B cannot happen. The door has one key, and it is this one, which is why the result clause takes cai, only then: zhiyou nuli xuexi, cai neng kaohao, only by studying hard can you do well in the exam. Put the two doors side by side. Zhiyao jiu, the easy door, as long as. Zhiyou cai, the strict door, only if. And the warning: swapping jiu for cai quietly turns as long as into only if, because the partner word does the talking.
Make the frame yours with a promise and a dare. The promise: zhiyao ni shuo, wo jiu bang ni, as long as you ask, I'll help, and the zhiyao jiu rhythm carries it, so say it aloud. The dare: chufei xia dayu, women mingtian dou qu pashan, unless it pours, we're hiking tomorrow, said with the cai-shrug in your voice: one condition, one exception. Check the pairing on each: zhiyao took jiu, and chufei closes with dou here, while chufei cai leads to the good outcome.
Chufei means unless, the one exception that changes the outcome, and its two frames point opposite ways. Chufei cai points to the good outcome if the condition holds: chufei laoban gei wo jiaxin, wo cai hui liu xialai, only if the boss gives me a raise will I stay. Chufei fouze points to the bad outcome if it does not: wo bu qu, chufei ni ye qu, fouze wo ziji zai jia daizhe, I won't go unless you come, otherwise I'll stay home. Chufei is a close kin of zhiyou cai, both spotlighting the single needed condition.
Pause and check both. First, zhiyao takes jiu, the easy door. Second, chufei fouze points to the bad outcome, the otherwise branch. The remaining review items: build the promise, zhiyao ni shuo, wo jiu bang ni; zhiyao promises sufficiency, not uniqueness; and the 否则 completion, fouze wo ziji zai jia daizhe, otherwise I'll stay home. Take one condition pattern into your next plan with a friend.
