Someone is tired but happy. What does 他很累,却很开心。 communicate?
却 marks the contrast before the adjective predicate 很开心. When a subject is expressed in the second clause, 却 normally follows it. An omitted repeated subject allows 却 at the start of that clause, as in this example.

Someone is tired but happy. Close the examples. Say a Mandarin response, then write it in Chinese. Explain briefly in English what the lesson’s pattern adds. Compare with the model, then change one detail and try again.
This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.
