A useful situation
- Your goal: Follow simple directions and ask for clarification.
- Before you start, recall the words you already know. New words below are here to help, not a list you must master before continuing.
Words you will use
- from从 cóng — from. from从school学校to set off出发。
- to / arrive到 dào — to / arrive. to / arrive到hospital医院。
- left左 zuǒ — left. towards向left左to revolve转。
- right右 yòu — right. towards向right右to revolve转。
- then / again after再 zài — then / again after. 先走，then / again after再to revolve转。
Match each word with its meaning in this unit.
Use the example sentences to check each word’s meaning in context.
Build the meaning
- from从……to / arrive到…… gives a starting point and destination. from从school学校to / arrive到hospital医院 describes a route, not the hospital’s current location.
- early先……then / again after再…… orders actions. towards向left左to revolve转 and towards向right右to revolve转 mean turn left and turn right. Repeat the direction to check understanding.
early先 and then / again after再 indicate order. Do not choose a route by spotting only one familiar direction word.
Complete “first go, then turn”: 先走，____转。
再 marks the following action.
Listen for a fresh detail
- Listen before revealing the script.
- Replay if you need to. This is practice: if playback is unavailable, use the script as reading and return to listening on a device with Mandarin playback.
Show the listening script and meaning
early先towards向left左to walk走，then / again after再towards向right右to revolve转。hospital医院at / in在school学校side旁边。
First go left, then turn right. The hospital is beside the school.
What is the final turn in the recording?
再向右转 is the second action.
Read a different account

- The reading and listening have different details. Use the material for the question you are answering.
- Read once for the situation, then again for the relevant detail. Reveal help when needed.
Show the reading meaning
From school to the hospital, first go right, then turn left. The hospital is beside the library. Lin An asks for repetition because she cannot hear clearly.
Where is the hospital in the reading?
医院在图书馆旁边 gives the stated location.
Speak, write, and review
- Give two-step directions. Your partner asks you to repeat the final turn.
- Record yourself privately or work with a partner. First try without the model, then compare the meaning and structure; a text checker cannot assess your pronunciation.
A: early先towards向right右to walk走，then / again after再towards向left左to revolve转。 B: to ask请to say again再说one time (all the way…一遍。 A: then / again after再towards向left左to revolve转。
- Write a two-step route with a starting point and destination.
- Tomorrow, recall two words and repeat the task with one detail changed. Revisit it after a few days; return sooner to the part that felt difficult.
Follow simple directions and ask for clarification. Use the examples as support, then try a fresh version. Completing these exercises records practice, not a guarantee of mastery.
