Literal and Figurative · Literal e Figurativo
The distinction is a starting point, not an answer
- The objective is to distinguish between the literal and figurative meanings of words and phrases.
- Distinguishing is the skill; deciding which one applies is often not the point.
- In poetry both frequently apply at once, and that is where the analysis lives.
In a poem, “cold” may report the weather and the welcome at the same time.
A distinção é um ponto de partida, não uma resposta
- O objetivo é distinguir entre os significados literais e figurados de palavras e frases.
- Distinguir é a habilidade; decidir qual se aplica muitas vezes não é o ponto.
- Na poesia, ambos frequentemente se aplicam ao mesmo tempo, e é aí que reside a análise.
Num poema, “frio” pode relatar o clima e a recepção ao mesmo tempo.
Multiple meanings add complexity
- Words with multiple meanings or connotations add nuance or complexity that can contribute to interpretations of a text.
- So a word that could mean two things is not a problem to solve.
- It is a resource, and the poem usually put it there deliberately.
Significados múltiplos adicionam complexidade
- Palavras com múltiplos significados ou conotações adicionam matiz ou complexidade que podem contribuir para interpretações de um texto.
- Portanto, uma palavra que poderia significar duas coisas não é um problema a resolver.
- É um recurso, e o poema geralmente a colocou lá deliberadamente.

The poem usually put it there deliberately. · O poema geralmente o colocou lá propositalmente.
Denotation and connotation
- A word's literal meaning is what it denotes; its connotations are what it brings with it.
- Slender and scrawny denote nearly the same thing and connote opposite judgements.
- The CED's phrase is meanings or connotations — both count as evidence.
Denotação e conotação
- O significado literal de uma palavra é o que ela denota; suas conotações são o que ela traz consigo.
- Slender (magra/finíssima) e scrawny (esguia/magrinha demais) denotam quase a mesma coisa e conotam julgamentos opostos.
- A expressão do CED é significados ou conotações — ambos contam como evidência.

The CED counts both meanings and connotations as contributing to interpretation. · O CED considera tanto significados quanto conotações como contribuindo para a interpretação.
Do not leap over the literal. A line often has a plain sense that is doing real work, and a symbolic reading that ignores it is usually weaker, not deeper. Establish what the words denote first; the figurative reading is strongest when it sits on top of the literal one.
Não pule sobre o literal. Uma linha muitas vezes tem um sentido claro que está fazendo trabalho real, e uma leitura simbólica que o ignora geralmente é mais fraca, não mais profunda. Estabeleça primeiro o que as palavras denotam; a leitura figurada é mais forte quando assenta sobre a literal.
Before reading a phrase figuratively, say what it means ____. · Antes de ler uma frase figurativamente, diga o que ela significa ____.
The figurative reading is strongest built on top of the literal one. · A leitura figurativa é mais forte construída sobre a literal.
Start literal, always
- Before reading a phrase figuratively, say what it means literally.
- Many wrong readings come from leaping to symbolism over a sentence that had a plain sense.
- The figurative reading is stronger when it is built on top of the literal one, not instead of it.
Comece pelo literal, sempre
- Antes de ler uma frase figurativamente, diga o que ela significa literalmente.
- Muitas leituras erradas vêm de pular para o simbolismo sobre uma frase que tinha um sentido claro.
- A leitura figurada é mais forte quando é construída sobre a literal, não em vez dela.

A two-meaning pass
- For each key word: what does it denote, and what does it connote?
- Could it be read literally here? Could it be read figuratively?
- If both, say so — that is the nuance the CED is pointing at.
Uma verificação de dois significados
- Para cada palavra-chave: o que ela denota e o que conota?
- Poderia ser lida literalmente aqui? Poderia ser lida figurativamente?
- Se ambas, diga isso — esse é o matiz que o CED está apontando.
"She kept the house." Literally: she did the housework, or she retained ownership after a death. Figuratively: she maintained something the family had. The poem uses all three, and the ambiguity is the point — a reading that picks one has thrown away two-thirds of the evidence.
“Ela guardava a casa.” Literalmente: ela fazia os serviços domésticos, ou manteve a propriedade após um óbito. Figurativamente: ela mantinha algo que a família possuía. O poema usa todas as três, e a ambiguidade é o ponto — uma leitura que escolhe uma jogou fora dois terços da evidência.
Distinguish literal from figurative — but in poetry both often apply at once. Words with multiple meanings or connotations add nuance or complexity that contributes to interpretation. Establish the literal sense first; the figurative reading is strongest built on top of it.
