| distance | 距离 | jù lí |
A decision before an answer
- towards往left左to walk走 tells someone which way to move. at / in在left左边 tells where something is. Direction and location do different jobs.
- Your goal: Describe weather, comfort and simple comparisons.
Read the relationship
- Use from从…to / arrive到… for a route from one place to another. towards往 marks movement toward a direction.
- Introduce places by distance, position and features.
往左走 asks someone to:
往 gives direction; 左 is left.
Use the defining rule
- Left and right are left左 and (bound form) right右. A relative place can use left左边、right side右边 or inside里面.
- Ask and give simple routes and travel arrangements.
今天比昨天冷 says:
The first item is the one described relative to the second.
Check the conditions
- away from离 expresses distance relation: school学校away from离我家很近。A comparison can use than / compared to比: today今天than / compared to比yesterday昨天cold冷。
- Ask and give simple routes and travel arrangements.
from从rail station车站往右to walk走,early先过桥,再往left左to walk走。hospital医院at / in在school学校side旁边。The first sentences give a route; the last gives a landmark relationship. A listener can draw the route and mark the hospital separately.
“From A to B”: 从A____B。
从…到… identifies start and end.
Apply the task format
- For directions, give actions in order with early先…again / then再… . Confirm the destination and landmarks so the listener can act.
- Ask and give simple routes and travel arrangements.
Do not interpret every to come来 and to go去 as absolute compass directions. They depend on a reference point.
