Wishing things were different

wish and if only
  • wish expresses a wish or a regret — something you'd like to be different.
  • I wish I had more time.
  • Outcome: express an unreal desired situation, past regret or desired change without confusing it with an open hope. Start with hypothetical conditions. Starting check: does I wish I were at home refer to a past visit? The past form can describe an unreal situation now.

I wish the washing machine would stop eating single socks.
