Three New Threads
A new set of organising claims
- The Industrial Revolution spread from Great Britain to the continent, where the state played a greater role in promoting industry.
- The experiences of everyday life were shaped by industrialisation, depending on the level of industrial development in a particular location.
- Political revolutions and the complications resulting from industrialisation triggered a range of ideological, governmental, and collective responses.
The first thread says industry...
And on the continent the state played a greater role.
The first thread has a direction
- It does not say industry appeared across Europe; it says it spread from one place to another.
- And it names a difference at the destination: on the continent the state played a greater role.
- So every comparison in this unit has a built-in asymmetry — private initiative in one place, state promotion in another.
Everyday life was shaped by industrialisation, depending on the level of development in a particular ____.
So a question about everyday life has no single answer.
The second thread is geographical
- Depending on the level of industrial development in a particular location is a licence to answer differently for different places.
- So a question about "everyday life in industrial Europe" has no single answer, and saying so is not evasion.
- It is the CED's own qualifier, and 6.2 and 6.4 will make it concrete.
Which of unit 6's threads?
Sort each statement into its thread.
Select all three kinds of response the CED names.
Each gets its own subtopic: 6.7, 6.9, 6.8.
"Depending on the level of industrial development in a particular location" is the CED's own qualifier. A question about everyday life in industrial Europe therefore has no single answer — different regions get different answers, and saying so is following the CED, not evading the question.
The CED's word for what industrialisation produced is...
It does not say problems, and does not say benefits.
The third thread is about responses
- Political revolutions and the complications resulting from industrialisation triggered a range of ideological, governmental, and collective responses.
- Three kinds of response, and the unit gives each a subtopic: ideologies (6.7), governments (6.9), collective organisation (6.8).
- The word complications is doing work — the CED does not say problems, and does not say benefits.
Put the objective's three verbs in the CED's order.
Three verbs, three places to look.
Writing the context
- The objective is the context in which industrialisation originated, developed, and spread.
- Origins: Britain's resources, institutions and political climate (6.2). Development: technology and scale (6.3). Spread: the state's role on the continent.
- Three verbs, three places to look, and one sentence each is enough.
Two families in the same decade: one in a mill town where the working day is set by a whistle, one in a district where the harvest still sets it. Both are living in industrial Europe. Only one of them is living in an industrial place.
Unit 6 opens three threads: the Industrial Revolution spread from Great Britain to the continent, where the state played a greater role; everyday life was shaped by industrialisation, depending on the level of development in a particular location; and political revolutions and the complications of industrialisation triggered ideological, governmental, and collective responses — three kinds of response, each with its own subtopic.
