Handout

Haiti

  • Revolutionary ideals inspired a revolt of enslaved people led by Toussaint L'Ouverture in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, which became the independent nation of Haiti in 1804.
  • The CED's verb is inspired: the ideals travelled to a place their authors had not intended them for.
  • And the outcome is a nation, dated — the first state in the Americas founded by a revolt of enslaved people.
