You and a friend have queued at a night market for nearly an hour. The noodle stall is still twenty people long, and your friend keeps checking the time. You want a line that offers a way out and still leaves room for a yes. That is the moment for yao bu ba.
Both orders are ordinary. Situation first lets the listener feel the problem before the plan: zhe jia kafeiguan li ren tai duo le, yao bu women qu duimian na jia ba. Plan first is also natural, with the reason following: yao bu women ba yecan gai dao shinei ba, xiawu keneng xiayu. The suggestion is an ordinary clause; women or zanmen is common; the subject can drop when everyone knows who will act.
Three look-alikes with different jobs. Yao bu ba floats plan B and invites agreement: how about we go across the street. Yao bushi introduces a counterfactual: yao bushi ni tixing wo, wo jiu wang le dai yaoshi, if you hadn''t reminded me, I would have forgotten my keys. Yaoburan tends to mean otherwise, pointing to a result to avoid: xianzai bu chufa, yaoburan jiu gan bu shang dianying le. Choose yaoburan when the next clause is a consequence; choose yao bu ba when it is plan B waiting for a yes.
Pause and check both. First, the speaker suggests ending early and wants the others to agree, which is the invitation reading. Second, yao bushi ni shouji li you ditu, women jiu milu le is the counterfactual, because it says what would have happened without the map. The handout answers walk through all six items. Every answer traces to the same distinction: yao bu floats plan B and invites agreement, yao bushi is counterfactual, yaoburan warns of a consequence.
