One frame owns this topic. Yi A wei B means take or regard A as B, treating one thing as your basis, your standard, or your focus. It rings elegant, semi-classical and formal, and it is the engine behind a whole family of set phrases that are worth memorising as complete units, because the frame is fixed and the phrases travel together.
The structure is yi, then A, then wei, then B. Women gongsi yi Yazhou shichang wei zhu, our company takes the Asian market as its focus. Xuduo qiye fazhan hen kuai, yi Maidanglao wei li, many firms have grown fast, take McDonald's as an example. The efficient way to own this pattern is to memorise its set phrases whole: yi wei zhu, mainly; yi wei li, for example; yi wei rong, proud of; and yi ren wei ben, put people first. The frame is fixed, and the exam tests the pairing rather than the parts, so the phrases are the learning unit.
The writing task is to name a city that stands for China's long history, and the set phrase carries the example by itself. Yi Xi'an wei li, Zhongguo lishi feichang youjiu, take Xi'an as an example, China's history is very long. Check the register: an essay sentence is exactly where the formal frame belongs, alongside reports and notices. The phrase does the introducing, so the sentence after it can go straight to the point.
The everyday paraphrase is ba A dangzuo B, treat A as B. Same idea, different clothes. The formal, written version: women yi zhiliang wei biaozhun, we take quality as our standard. The casual, spoken version: wo ba zheli dangzuo ziji de jia, I treat this place as my own home. The choice is the page the sentence sits on, an essay or report takes the yi wei frame, and a conversation at dinner takes the ba dangzuo frame, with no loss of meaning between them.
Two boundaries keep the frame honest. First, register: yi wei is formal and written, so save it for essays, reports and signs, and let ba dangzuo carry the same idea in conversation. Second, learning strategy: because the frame is fixed, learn the set phrases as whole units, yi wei zhu, yi wei li, yi wei rong, yi ren wei ben, rather than assembling them from parts each time. The exam tests the pairing, and the pairing lives in the phrase.
Pause and check both. First, take as an example is yi wei li, the li being the example character, while yi wei zhu means mainly. Second, the casual equivalent is ba A dangzuo B, treat A as B, the spoken twin of the formal frame. The remaining review item, yi ren wei ben, means put people first, people as the basis, a phrase you will meet on signs and in policy writing.
