Change comes out of a conflict of values
- Often the change in a character emerges directly from a conflict of values represented in the narrative.
- So a character does not change because time passed — they change because two values could not both be kept.
- Naming the conflict is therefore the first half of explaining the change.
When a character must choose between loyalty and honesty, time alone cannot write the ending.

Circumstances can drive it too
- Changes in a character's circumstances may lead to changes in that character.
- This is the external-to-internal arrow from unit 3, restated as a cause of change.
- So ask whether the character changed because of what happened, or because of what they had to choose.
Trace the evidence and source of a change; distinguish understanding from action.

Sudden change has a name
- While characters can change gradually, they can also change suddenly as the result of a moment of realization, known as an epiphany 顿悟.
- An epiphany allows a character to see things in a new light, and is often directly related to a central conflict of the narrative.
- So an epiphany is not just a surprise — it is the moment a conflict becomes visible to the person inside it.

An epiphany is not any surprise. The CED ties it to a moment of realization that lets a character see things in a new light, and it is often directly related to a central conflict. A shocking event that changes nobody's understanding is a plot turn, not an epiphany.

An epiphany can move the plot
- An epiphany may affect the plot by causing a character to act on their sudden realization.
- So the analysis has two steps: the realization, and what it made them do.
- An epiphany that changes nothing is possible — and saying so is a claim worth making.

An epiphany pass
- Find the moment. Quote the sentence where the character sees differently.
- Name the conflict of values it makes visible.
- Then say what they do next — and if they do nothing, say that too.
She has spent the story defending her father's memory. In the last scene she hears a neighbour describe him neutrally, and realises she has been defending him against no one. The conflict — loyalty against truth — was in every earlier scene; the epiphany is the first moment she can see it.
Change often emerges from a conflict of values, and changed circumstances can cause it too. An epiphany is a sudden moment of realization that lets a character see things in a new light, often related to a central conflict, and it may affect the plot by making them act.
