Significance comes from agency
- The significance of characters is often revealed through their agency and through nuanced descriptions.
- Agency 能动性 is the capacity to act and to have those actions matter.
- So a character who is described at length but never acts on anything is being told to you, not shown.
The character may have a dramatic hat; the question is whether they ever get to choose where to go.

Choices reveal values
- Characters' choices — in speech, action and inaction — reveal what they value.
- The three channels are the same ones from unit 3, but the question has changed.
- There the question was what is their motive; here it is what do they value — a motive is local, a value is durable.

- A nuanced description is one that does not resolve into a single adjective.
- Kind but exact, generous on her own terms — the qualification is the nuance.
- When a text refuses to simplify a character, that refusal is itself the characterisation.

A motive is local; a value is durable. Unit 3 asked what a character wanted in a given scene; this subtopic asks what they value across the story. Answering the first when the question asks the second gives an accurate sentence that does not address the prompt.

Inaction again, and it still counts
- Inaction appears in the CED's list of choices for the second time.
- Not speaking, not going, not intervening — each is a choice with a value behind it.
- In a short story, where little happens, inaction is often the only choice available to analyse.

An agency pass
- List every choice the character makes, including the ones not to act.
- For each, name the value it implies.
- Then ask whether the story lets those choices matter — that is where significance is.
She does not go to the funeral. Motive (local): she cannot face the family. Value (durable): she will not perform a grief she does not feel — which the story confirms three more times, each in a smaller way. The second reading survives the whole text; the first does not.
Significance is revealed through agency and nuanced descriptions. Choices in speech, action and inaction reveal what characters value — and a value is durable where a motive is local. A nuanced description refuses a single adjective, and that refusal is itself characterisation.
