A line break is a decision

• Prose breaks lines where the page ends; a poem breaks them where the poet chose.
• Line and stanza breaks contribute to the development and relationship of ideas in a poem.
• So every break is available as evidence, and most students never use any of them.

A line break can leave a word hanging at the cliff edge while the next line arrives with the ladder.

Arrangement, not just breaking

• The arrangement of lines and stanzas contributes to the development and relationship of ideas.
• Equal stanzas propose that the parts are equal; one short stanza among long ones does not.

Position carries meaning

• Structure affects readers' reactions and expectations by presenting the relationships among ideas via their relative positions and their placement within the text as a whole.
• Relative position: what stands next to what.
• Placement in the whole: near the opening, at the centre, in the last line.

Expectation is created and then met or refused

• Three stanzas of the same shape teach the reader what the fourth will look like.
• A fourth that breaks the pattern is doing work no image could do.
• Structural analysis is mostly this: name the pattern, then name where it breaks.

A structure pass

• Count the stanzas and their lines. Note any that differ.
• Find where a sentence runs past a line break, and what that delays.
• Say which idea sits in the final line — the position a reader remembers.
