One racing heart, different interpretations

Compare proposed mechanisms

Describe tendencies without fixing behaviour

- A sociable person can be quiet at a funeral. One observation neither establishes nor disproves a broad tendency; behaviour also depends on the situation.

This contrast illustrates an interpretation account. An everyday example does not prove that the complete physiological states are identical.
Explain rather than rename
- “Aggressive because he has an aggressive personality” supplies a label without a mechanism. Describe a proposed experience or process and what evidence would support it.
- An earlier unpleasant conversation might contribute to later avoidance. This is a possible learning account, not a diagnosis from one behaviour.

The observation supports a situation-specific description. A lasting trait needs evidence across relevant situations and time.
Check the limit of the example
- Similar heart rates do not prove that all bodily activity is identical. An everyday contrast can illustrate an appraisal account without experimentally proving it.
