One pair closes the level. De shihou pins an action during an event, when or while, and yihou pins it after the event. Both attach to the same basketball game, but they pin different moments, and the signpost between the two territories is one little result word, wan, finished.
The difference is where the second action lands. De shihou means during: da lanqiu de shihou hui chuhan, you sweat while playing basketball, the sweating landing in the middle of the game. Yihou means after: da wan lanqiu yihou yao xizao, after finishing basketball you need to shower, the shower waiting until the game is over. Same sport, two moments, two pins.
The tell is wan. Chi fan de shihou, while eating, the ongoing verb with no wan. Chi wan fan yihou, after finishing eating, where the wan has crossed you into after-territory. So the check is one glance: hunt for the wan before choosing your pin. If it is there, you are after the event, and yihou follows. If not, you are inside it, and de shihou follows.
Make the pair carry your whole day. The during habit: chi fan de shihou buyao kan shouji, don't look at your phone while eating, no wan, inside the meal. The after habit: chi wan fan yihou yao sanbu, take a walk after eating, wan present, after the meal. The homework version runs both: zuo zuoye de shihou wo ting yinyue; zuo wan zuoye yihou wo qu paobu, listening to music while doing homework, running after finishing it. Say both aloud, and the level closes with the pin in the right place.
Pause and check both. First, the wan tells you the action is completed, you have crossed into after-territory, so yihou is the pin. Second, true: plain yihou alone also means in the future, yihou wo xiang qu Zhongguo, in the future I want to go to China.
