A confident lecturer can still be making a limited claim
- A fictional seminar asks whether peer feedback improves revision. Your notes need the speaker’s argument, not just a familiar phrase such as “feedback works.” A qualification can change what the lecturer actually recommends.
- This original GAC014-aligned lesson uses a printed script and partner-read rehearsal. Its deterministic checks assess text comprehension. No reviewed recording is attached, so it cannot measure recorded listening proficiency.
What is the seminar’s question? · ¿Cuál es la pregunta del seminario?
The opening explicitly asks about peer comments and revision.
Predict the structure, then record its signals
- Before a partner reads the script, prepare columns for claim, evidence and limitation. Listen for “first,” “however” and “therefore.” These signals tell you how ideas connect; they do not by themselves make the evidence strong.
- On a second reading, check the numbers and scope against the text. You may pause during rehearsal. A later formal listening task would need an approved recording, clear replay rules and a separate marking blueprint.
Our question is whether peer comments help students revise. In one fictional class, sixteen volunteers reviewed a paragraph with a partner. Twelve made at least one relevant revision afterwards. However, there was no group revising without a partner, and all volunteers had already received the teacher’s checklist. Therefore, this trial shows useful revisions after peer review, but it does not isolate the effect of peer comments. A future comparison could give both groups the same checklist.

How many volunteers made at least one relevant revision?
Twelve revised; sixteen is the number of volunteers.
Keep the claim no stronger than its evidence
- The speaker observes relevant revisions after review. They do not say that comments alone caused the revisions. The checklist and absence of a comparison group both matter. Keep “after” distinct from “because of.”
- A relevant revision improves the paragraph according to the task’s criteria; it is not merely any changed word. If a real speaker leaves a term undefined, note that uncertainty and request a definition before reporting a numerical result.
Which TWO limits are stated? · ¿CUÁLES DOS límites están declarados?
The checklist and missing comparison prevent isolation of the peer-comment effect.
Ask a question that tests the argument
- A useful question is “How was a relevant revision defined?” or “Would both future groups receive the same checklist?” These questions address measurement and comparison. “Why is feedback always perfect?” assumes a claim the lecturer never made.
- In pairs, one person answers only from the script. When information is missing, say “The script does not specify that.” Propose what should be checked rather than inventing a definition and attributing it to the speaker.
The script defines exactly how a relevant revision was judged.
It does not give that definition, so a clarification question is justified.
Give a critical spoken summary
- Prepare a one-minute summary: research question, observed result, two limits and the suggested next comparison. Use “reported,” “after” and “does not isolate” where appropriate. A critical summary can acknowledge useful evidence without either exaggerating or dismissing it.
- A listener identifies your main claim and one limitation. If they hear “proved,” revise the sentence that suggested certainty. Rehearse without reading every word while retaining the important scope and numbers.
Which summary preserves the conclusion? · ¿Qué resumen preserva la conclusión?
It reports the observation and the explicit causal limit.
Evaluate your note-taking strategy
- Compare your first notes with the complete script. Did you miss the contrast after “however,” confuse sixteen volunteers with twelve revisions, or copy the whole opening but omit the conclusion? Name one specific repair for the next rehearsal.
- Write three note headings for another lecture and practise a clarification question. Your self-check concerns accurate selection, argument structure and uncertainty; pronunciation and listening attainment require their own suitable assessment.
The lecturer reports relevant revisions in twelve of sixteen volunteers after peer review. Since everyone had a teacher checklist and there was no comparison group, the trial does not establish the effect of peer comments alone.
Do not remove a limitation when compressing your notes. A shorter summary that changes the claim is inaccurate.
Critical listening tracks claim, evidence, qualification and unanswered questions, then reports their relationship accurately.
