Adjective + extremely极了 (extremely)
degree / adjective linker很to be fond of eating好吃 is not enough
- Your friend has cooked for you, and the food is far better than "quite good".
- this这个vegetable菜to be fond of eating好吃extremely极了! – "This dish is absolutely delicious!" extremely极了 pushes the adjective to its top degree.
Put extremely极了 after the adjective
- Subject + Adjective + extremely极了: the adjective comes first and extremely极了 closes the clause.
- The adjective stands alone in front of extremely极了, so degree / adjective linker很 and very非常 drop out: 好极了, cold冷extremely极了, busy忙extremely极了.
today今天hot热extremely极了。

Feelings work the same way
- Feeling words take extremely极了 too: to hear听到this这个news消息,I / me我happy高兴extremely极了。 – "When I heard the news, I was overjoyed."
- A few feeling verbs also accept it: I / me我to like喜欢extremely极了。 – "I absolutely love it."
finish the exam考完after以后,I我tired累extremely极了。
Two places it goes wrong
- No degree / adjective linker很 or very非常 in front: say 好极了, not degree / adjective linker很好极了, because extremely极了 already carries the degree.
- extremely极了 never comes before the adjective: cold冷extremely极了, not extremely极了cold冷.
degree / adjective linker很 + Adj, very非常 + Adj and Adj + extremely极了
- degree / adjective linker很 + Adj is the neutral description (weather天气degree / adjective linker很good好); very非常 + Adj is strong and fits writing as well as speech.
- Adj + extremely极了 is spoken and exclamatory, often a reaction: A: outside (also pr. for this…外面cold冷(yes/no ?)吗? B: cold冷extremely极了!
outside外面cold冷吗?cold冷extremely极了!
Recap
- Adjective + extremely极了 = extremely, absolutely; it ends the clause.
- No degree / adjective linker很 or very非常 before it. Use it to react with feeling, mostly in speech.
Practise this pattern step by step.
Doubling adjectives (AA / AABB)
Describing a picture in a lively way
- You are describing a child's drawing: big eyes, a round face, a very tidy room.
- she / her她to have / there is有一双大大的eye眼睛。 – "She has big, big eyes." Doubling the adjective paints a vivid picture.
One-syllable adjectives: AA
- A one-syllable adjective repeats as AA, usually followed by (modifier / structural particle)的 before a noun: 大大的eye眼睛, 红红的apple苹果.
- The second syllable is often said lightly; the tone of the first stays clear.
she她has有a pair of一双big, big大大的eyes眼睛。

Two-syllable adjectives: AABB
- A two-syllable adjective AB doubles each syllable: clean干净 → 干干净净, happy高兴 → cheerful and optimistic高高兴兴, clear清楚 → 清清楚楚.
- The doubled form can describe a noun or an action: room房间干干净净(modifier / structural particle)的 / he / him他cheerful and optimistic高高兴兴(adverb -ly)地to return home回家(completed / change)了。
he他把room房间cleaned打扫得spotlessly clean干干净净的。
What doubling already says
- No degree / adjective linker很 or very非常 in front: 大大的eye眼睛, not degree / adjective linker很大大的eye眼睛, because doubling already adds the degree.
- The common adjectives taught here use AABB, as in 干干净净. Some other adjectives allow ABAB, so learn each adjective and its accepted reduplicated form.
Doubled adjectives describe, they do not compare
- Doubled forms describe how something looks or feels; they do not take not不: say not不clean干净, not not不干干净净.
- Many are fixed habits of speech. Learn common ones as chunks: slowly慢慢(adverb -ly)地to walk走, well好好(adverb -ly)地rest休息, cheerful and optimistic高高兴兴地玩。
you你properly好好rest休息吧。
Recap
- One syllable: AA((modifier / structural particle)的) – 大大的, 红红的. Two syllables: AABB – 干干净净, cheerful and optimistic高高兴兴.
- Doubling adds vividness and degree, so drop degree / adjective linker很 and do not negate it with not不.
Practise this pattern step by step.
Adjective + (adverb -ly)地 + Verb (making an adverb)
How did they do it?
- Your grandmother crosses the busy road carefully; your little brother does his homework seriously for once.
- (informal) grandma…奶奶slowly慢慢(adverb -ly)地to walk past走过street马路。 – "Grandma slowly walks across the road." (adverb -ly)地 turns a description into how the action is done.
Adjective + (adverb -ly)地 + Verb
- Subject + Adjective + (adverb -ly)地 + Verb: the description comes before the verb and (adverb -ly)地 (de) links them.
- Two-syllable adjectives are the most common: conscientious认真(adverb -ly)地to learn学习, happy高兴地说, quiet安静(adverb -ly)地to read看书.
he他seriously认真地study学习。

Doubled and phrase descriptions
- Doubled adjectives often take (adverb -ly)地: child孩子(plural)们cheerful and optimistic高高兴兴(adverb -ly)地to return home回家(completed / change)了。 – "The children went home happily."
- A short phrase works too: 很快(adverb -ly)地variant of 吃吃to finish完(completed / change)了cooked rice饭, very非常to be careful小心(adverb -ly)地to open打开box盒子.
the children孩子们happily高高兴兴地go home回家了。
Keep the order and the character straight
- (adverb -ly)地 comes before the verb: conscientious认真(adverb -ly)地to learn学习. After the verb you need (degree marker)得: 他学得degree / adjective linker很conscientious认真.
- Write (adverb -ly)地, not (modifier / structural particle)的, between the description and the verb; both are read de.
(adverb -ly)地 before the verb, (degree marker)得 after it
- he / him他conscientious认真地写school assignment作业 tells how he does it: carefully, while doing it.
- he / him他to write写(degree marker)得degree / adjective linker很conscientious认真 comments on the result or manner after the fact: "He writes very carefully."
he他writes写得very很carefully认真。
Recap
- Adjective + (adverb -ly)地 + Verb = do something in that way: slowly慢慢(adverb -ly)地to walk走, conscientious认真(adverb -ly)地to learn学习.
- (adverb -ly)地 sits before the verb; (degree marker)得 follows the verb. Keep (modifier / structural particle)的 for nouns.
Practise this pattern step by step.
so much这么 / like that那么 + Adjective (so …)
It really is that hot
- You step outside in July and it is much hotter than you expected.
- today今天how / why怎么so much这么to warm up热! – "How come it is so hot today!" so much这么 points to the degree you are feeling right now.
so much这么 / like that那么 + Adjective
- so much这么 + Adj = "so …" about something here and now; like that那么 + Adj = "so …" about something over there, earlier or mentioned.
- Like degree / adjective linker很, they stand directly before the adjective: so much这么expensive贵, like that那么to distance oneself from…远.
this这(measure word)件clothes衣服so这么expensive贵。

Near and far
- Holding the shoes: 这双鞋so much这么cheap便宜! – "These shoes are so cheap!"
- Talking about a city you visited: there那儿(modifier / structural particle)的winter冬天like that那么cold冷,you你how / why怎么to put up with受得了? – "The winters there are so cold; how do you stand it?"
you你home家so那么far远,every day每天how怎么come来?
Keep one degree word
- Do not add degree / adjective linker很 as well: so much这么to warm up热, not so much这么degree / adjective linker很to warm up热, since so much这么 already gives the degree.
- Place so much这么 or like that那么 before the adjective, not after it: like that那么to distance oneself from…远, not to distance oneself from…远like that那么.
Also in comparisons
- like that那么 often sharpens a not have / haven't没有 comparison: I / me我not have / haven't没有he / him他like that那么high高。 – "I am not as tall as him."
- so much这么 can also go before a verb of degree: you你how / why怎么so much这么to like喜欢variant of 吃吃hot (spicy)辣(modifier / structural particle)的?
I我not as没有him他so那么tall高。
Recap
- so much这么 / like that那么 + Adjective = "so …": so much这么 for here and now, like that那么 for there, then or what was mentioned.
- It replaces degree / adjective linker很; it often comes with how / why怎么 (surprise) or not have / haven't没有 (comparison).
Practise this pattern step by step.
A with / and跟 / and / with和 B same一样 (the same as)
Twins in the same class
- Two classmates are exactly the same height, and a new teacher keeps mixing them up.
- older brother哥哥with / and跟younger brother弟弟same一样high高。 – "The older brother is as tall as the younger brother."
A with / and跟 / and / with和 B same一样 (+ Adjective)
- A + with / and跟 / and / with和 + B + same一样 = "A is the same as B"; add an adjective to say in what way: same一样high高, same一样busy忙.
- with / and跟 and and / with和 both work here; with / and跟 is a little more common in speech.
my我的phone手机and跟yours你的the same一样。

The same as, but not the same
- Negate by putting not不 before same一样: I / me我(modifier / structural particle)的way of thinking想法with / and跟you你(modifier / structural particle)的not不same一样。 – "My idea is different from yours."
- Ask with (yes/no ?)吗 or same一样not不same一样: Beijing, capital of the…北京(modifier / structural particle)的winter冬天with / and跟Shanghai municipality…上海(modifier / structural particle)的same一样cold冷(yes/no ?)吗?
today今天and跟yesterday昨天equally一样cold冷。
Where not不 and degree / adjective linker很 go
- not不 goes before same一样: with / and跟he / him他not不same一样, not not不with / and跟he / him他same一样 for "different from him".
- No degree / adjective linker很 before the adjective after same一样: same一样high高, not same一样degree / adjective linker很high高.
same一样 versus than / compared to比
- same一样 says the two are equal; than / compared to比 says one is more: older brother哥哥than / compared to比younger brother弟弟high高 ("taller than").
- same一样 can also describe a noun with (modifier / structural particle)的: we / us我们to buy买(completed / change)了same一样(modifier / structural particle)的clothes衣服。 – "We bought the same clothes."
we我们bought买了the same一样的clothes衣服。
Recap
- A with / and跟/and / with和 B same一样 (+ Adj) = A is (as Adj as) B. Negative: A with / and跟 B not不same一样.
- The adjective after same一样 stays bare; same一样(modifier / structural particle)的 + noun = the same thing.
Practise this pattern step by step.
again又 … again又 … (both … and …)
A good buy
- You found a jacket that looks great and costs very little, and you want to say both at once.
- 这件clothes衣服again又cheap便宜again又good-looking好看。 – "This jacket is both cheap and good-looking."
again又 + A + again又 + B
- Subject + again又 + Adj/Verb + again又 + Adj/Verb: each again又 sits directly before its own description.
- The two qualities point the same way, both good or both bad: 又快又好, again又rope累again又to be hungry饿.
I我both又tired累and又hungry饿。

Actions as well as qualities
- Verb phrases fit too: child孩子(plural)们again又to sing唱again又to jump跳。 – "The children sang and danced."
- Use it to describe a person or place with two clear features: she / her她(modifier / structural particle)的room房间again又see 大夫大again又clean干净。
the children孩子们both又sing唱and又dance跳。
Keep the two halves matched
- Use two qualities with the same direction: again又cheap便宜again又good-looking好看 is natural; again又cheap便宜again又ugly难看 sounds odd unless you are joking.
- No degree / adjective linker很 inside the pattern: 又高又大, not again又degree / adjective linker很high高again又很大.
again又…again又… versus also也 and and / with和
- and / with和 cannot join two adjectives in a predicate: say again又cheap便宜again又good-looking好看, not cheap便宜and / with和good-looking好看.
- again又…again又… stresses that both features are present at the same time; degree / adjective linker很cheap便宜,also也degree / adjective linker很good-looking好看 lists them one after another.
here这儿的food菜very很cheap便宜,also也very很tasty好吃。
Recap
- again又 A again又 B = both A and B, at the same time. Each again又 goes before its own adjective or verb.
- Pick two qualities that point the same way, and leave out degree / adjective linker很.
Practise this pattern step by step.
Subject + fairly / rather比较 + Adjective (fairly, rather)
Not great, not terrible
- A friend asks how your new job is. It is fine, but you would not call it amazing.
- to work工作比较忙,but不过colleague同事all / both都degree / adjective linker很good好。 – "The work is fairly busy, but my colleagues are all nice."
fairly / rather比较 + Adjective
- Subject + fairly / rather比较 + Adj = "fairly, rather, relatively": fairly / rather比较expensive贵, fairly / rather比较difficult / hard难, fairly / rather比较to distance oneself from…远.
- Here fairly / rather比较 is an adverb of degree, so it takes the place of degree / adjective linker很; there is no second thing being compared.
this这(measure word)个question问题fairly比较difficult难。

A softer way to answer
- Answering "Is the restaurant far?": fairly / rather比较to distance oneself from…远,we / us我们to take a taxi (in town)打车(suggestion)吧。 – "It's rather far; let's take a taxi."
- fairly / rather比较 also goes before some verbs of liking: I / me我fairly / rather比较to like喜欢to drink tea喝茶。 – "I prefer tea (I like tea more)."
I我rather比较like喜欢drinking喝tea茶。
Do not combine it with than / compared to比
- In a than / compared to比 comparison, fairly / rather比较 cannot appear before the adjective: he / him他than / compared to比I / me我high高, not he / him他than / compared to比I / me我fairly / rather比较high高.
- Do not stack it with degree / adjective linker很: 比较忙, not degree / adjective linker很比较忙 or fairly / rather比较degree / adjective linker很busy忙.
fairly / rather比较 as a verb
- fairly / rather比较 can also be a verb meaning "to compare": we / us我们fairly / rather比较(used after a verb) give it…一下this这两个cell phone手机。 – "Let's compare these two phones."
- Tell them apart by position: before an adjective it means "fairly"; with an object it means "compare".
we我们compare比较briefly一下these这two两个phones手机。
Recap
- fairly / rather比较 + Adj = fairly, rather; it replaces degree / adjective linker很 and gives a moderate answer.
- It never goes inside a than / compared to比 sentence. With an object, fairly / rather比较 is the verb "compare".
Practise this pattern step by step.
many多 + Adjective + (exclamation)啊! (how …!)
The view from the top
- You reach the top of a mountain and the whole city lies below you.
- here这儿(modifier / structural particle)的scenery风景many多beautiful美(exclamation)啊! – "How beautiful the view is here!"
many多 + Adjective + (exclamation)啊!
- many多 + Adj + (exclamation)啊 is an exclamation: "How … !" many多 goes before the adjective and (exclamation)啊 closes the sentence.
- The adjective stands alone: 多好(exclamation)啊, 多快(exclamation)啊, many多adorable可爱(exclamation)啊.
your你的daughter女儿how多cute可爱啊!

Sharing a feeling
- Admiring: you你(modifier / structural particle)的Chinese language中文variant of 说说(degree marker)得many多good好(exclamation)啊! – "How well you speak Chinese!"
- Complaining works too: today今天多热(exclamation)啊! – "How hot it is today!"
today今天how多hot热啊!
Exclaim, do not ask
- No degree / adjective linker很 inside: many多beautiful美(exclamation)啊, not many多degree / adjective linker很beautiful美(exclamation)啊; many多 already carries the degree.
- Keep (exclamation)啊 and the exclamation mark. Without them, many多 + Adj often becomes a question: 多远? – "How far is it?"
many多…(exclamation)啊 versus too太…(completed / change)了
- too太 + Adj + (completed / change)了 also reacts strongly: too太beautiful美(completed / change)了! It is common and often means "too": 太贵(completed / change)了.
- many多 + Adj + (exclamation)啊 is warmer and more admiring; it suits praise and wonder.
this这(measure word)件clothes衣服too太expensive贵了!
Recap
- many多 + Adj + (exclamation)啊! = How … ! An exclamation of admiration or strong feeling.
- Bare adjective, no degree / adjective linker很; without (exclamation)啊 and "!", many多 + Adj can be a question about amount.
Practise this pattern step by step.
Adjective + (modifier / structural particle)的 + Noun (describing a noun)
Which one is yours?
- At the station a lost-property officer asks which bag is yours. You need more than "a bag".
- I / me我(modifier / structural particle)的to be / is是that那个red (color)红色(modifier / structural particle)的大包。 – "Mine is that big red bag."
Adjective + (modifier / structural particle)的 + Noun
- Adj + (modifier / structural particle)的 + Noun: the description comes first and (modifier / structural particle)的 links it to the noun: pretty漂亮(modifier / structural particle)的flower花, interesting有意思(modifier / structural particle)的book书.
- Two-syllable adjectives and adjectives with degree / adjective linker很 usually need (modifier / structural particle)的: degree / adjective linker很good好(modifier / structural particle)的friend朋友, clean干净(modifier / structural particle)的room房间.
she她is是a一(measure word)个very很clever聪明的student学生。

Short fixed pairs drop (modifier / structural particle)的
- Many one-syllable adjectives join the noun directly: good person好人, 新车, major city大城市, black tea红茶.
- These pairs act like single words. Adding (modifier / structural particle)的 makes the description more contrastive: 我要new新(modifier / structural particle)的, don't不要old旧(modifier / structural particle)的.
Beijing北京is是a一(measure word)个big大city城市。
When (modifier / structural particle)的 is needed
- Keep (modifier / structural particle)的 after degree / adjective linker很 + Adj: degree / adjective linker很good好(modifier / structural particle)的friend朋友, not degree / adjective linker很good好friend朋友.
- The description goes before the noun, never after: pretty漂亮(modifier / structural particle)的clothes衣服, not clothes衣服pretty漂亮(modifier / structural particle)的 (that is a separate sentence pattern).
Leaving the noun out
- When the noun is clear, Adj + (modifier / structural particle)的 can stand alone: I / me我to like喜欢red红(modifier / structural particle)的。 – "I like the red one."
- This is common in shops and choices: see 大夫大(modifier / structural particle)的or / still还是small小(modifier / structural particle)的? – "The big one or the small one?"
you你want要big大的or还是small小的?
Recap
- Adj + (modifier / structural particle)的 + Noun describes a noun; the description always comes first.
- degree / adjective linker很 + Adj and most two-syllable adjectives need (modifier / structural particle)的; common one-syllable pairs (good person好人, 新车) do not. Adj + (modifier / structural particle)的 alone = "the … one".
Practise this pattern step by step.
more and more越来越 (more and more)
The city keeps changing
- You go back to your hometown after five years: more cars, more tall buildings, more people.
- I / me我(modifier / structural particle)的hometown家乡more and more越来越pretty漂亮(completed / change)了。 – "My hometown is getting more and more beautiful."
more and more越来越 + Adjective
- Subject + more and more越来越 + Adj (+ (completed / change)了) = "more and more …": a quality keeps growing over time.
- (completed / change)了 at the end is common because the sentence reports a change: weather天气more and more越来越cold冷(completed / change)了。
the weather天气more and more越来越cold冷了。

Feelings and abilities that grow
- Feeling verbs fit too: I / me我more and more越来越to like喜欢this这个city城市(completed / change)了。 – "I like this city more and more."
- So do verbs of ability with an object: he / him他more and more越来越can / will会to prepare a meal做饭(completed / change)了。 – "He is getting better and better at cooking."
I我more and more越来越like喜欢this这个city城市了。
One degree word only
- No degree / adjective linker很 or very非常 after more and more越来越: more and more越来越good好, not more and more越来越degree / adjective linker很good好.
- more and more越来越 comes after the subject and before the adjective: he / him他more and more越来越high高, not more and more越来越he / him他high高.
more and more越来越 versus to exceed越…to exceed越…
- more and more越来越 has one quality that grows with time.
- to exceed越 A to exceed越 B links two things: the more A, the more B: 雨越down下to exceed越see 大夫大 – "The rain is getting heavier and heavier (the longer it rains)."
the rain雨the more越falls下the more越heavy大。
Recap
- more and more越来越 + Adj (+ (completed / change)了) = more and more …, a change over time.
- Bare adjective after it, no degree / adjective linker很; feeling verbs such as to like喜欢 also work.
Practise this pattern step by step.

Adjective + extremely极了 (extremely)
0101.1 extremely极了
good-looking好看extremely极了 = “absolutely brilliant”. extremely极了 follows the adjective directly.
0101.2 D. weather天气好极了。
extremely极了 follows a bare adjective. degree / adjective linker很 and very非常 would add a second degree word, and extremely极了 never comes first.
0101.3 True.
Adj + extremely极了 is typical of spoken reactions. In a formal report very非常cold冷 would be more usual.
0101.4 to hear听到this这个news消息,I / me我happy高兴extremely极了。
Time clause first, then Subject + Adjective + extremely极了: to hear听到this这个news消息,I / me我happy高兴extremely极了。
0101.5 One possible response: this这个vegetable菜to be fond of eating好吃extremely极了!
Check meaning and form:

- I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
- No degree / adjective linker很 or very非常 in front: say 好极了, not degree / adjective linker很好极了, because extremely极了 already carries the degree.
- extremely极了 never comes before the adjective: cold冷extremely极了, not extremely极了cold冷.
- I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.
