越来越 (more and more)

Getting colder… and colder… and colder

• Some changes don't just happen — they keep growing.
• English piles up words: "more and more", "colder and colder".
• Chinese has one neat engine for it: more and more越来越yuè lái yuè.

Subj + more and more越来越yuè lái yuè + Adj + (completed / change)了le

• more and more越来越yuè lái yuè + Adj says the quality keeps rising; the final (completed / change)了le marks the change.

weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng了le。

• weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng(completed / change)了le = "the weather is getting colder and colder."

It works with feeling-verbs too

• With verbs like to like喜欢xǐ huan / want / think / miss想xiǎng, more and more越来越yuè lái yuè means the feeling keeps growing.

I我wǒmore and more越来越yuè lái yuèlike喜欢xǐ huanChinese中文Zhōng wén了le。

• more and more越来越yuè lái yuèto like喜欢xǐ huanChinese language中文zhōng wén(completed / change)了le = "I like Chinese more and more."

Don't confuse it with to exceed越yuè…to exceed越yuè…

• more and more越来越yuè lái yuè = "more and more" over time — one rising quality.
• to exceed越yuè A to exceed越yuè B = "the more A, the more B" — two linked things, a different pattern.
