Same news, different text type
- A library can announce an early closing to a group, while a friend can explain it in a conversation 对话 and answer questions. The subject alone does not decide the text type
- An announcement 通知 mainly gives a group information or instructions. Identify who speaks, who listens and whether a reply is expected.
Purpose, audience and formality
- The purpose 目的 is what the speaker wants to achieve; the audience 听众 is who needs the message. These help you decide what to listen for.
- Formality 正式程度 concerns the language suitable for the situation. A friendly voice can still give a formal instruction; check the wording and setting together.
A speaker tells a hall that the library closes early on Friday, and expects no reply. Which text type is that?
The coordinator addresses a group with information and instructions rather than exchanging replies. Use purpose, audience and expected response together; the library topic alone does not decide the type.
Keep the detail and its condition
- Listening for detail 精听 targets information such as a place, date or required action. Read the questions before playing this original library announcement.
- Distinguish the Friday closing time, weekend book-return arrangement and new room-booking method. Do not assume every number describes a changed location.
In the announcement, what should you do with a book that is due on Friday? ·
The announcement gives the box beside the main entrance, available all weekend, and says no late fee is charged. ·
What changed about the group study rooms? ·
Booking moved online and opens seven days ahead. The second floor was where they already are, which is the distractor. ·
Use signposts to locate a point
- Signposts 提示语 such as “first”, “second” and “finally” show the talk’s route. They locate a point; they do not replace its content.
- In the original seminar opening below, identify the three planned activities. Then check what the speaker says about choosing a listening focus.
Which of these are signposts — words that tell a listener where they are in a talk? Choose all that apply. ·
Signposts mark structure, not content. "Timetable" is a topic word — useful, but it does not tell you where you are.
Keep meaning in short notes
- Note-taking 记笔记 keeps useful names, numbers and relationships. Preserve negatives and conditions: “return box; weekend; no late fee” differs from “return Monday; fee”.
- Do not force every sentence into complete written form while the speaker continues. Use short notes, then check gaps afterwards; no fixed percentage of lost listening follows from one note style.
Check the uncertain detail
- If you miss one date, ask “Could I check whether you said Thursday or Tuesday?” If most of the message is unclear, ask for a fuller explanation rather than guessing.
- Restate the relevant action and let the speaker confirm or correct it. This is a useful communication strategy, not a promise of an official mark.
Order these preparation, during-listening and follow-up actions. ·
Prepare a focus, record selectively during speech, mark uncertainty without abandoning the message, then check important gaps afterwards. These are practice actions, not a guarantee of complete understanding.
Write one sentence you could say in a seminar to check a detail you did not catch, without interrupting rudely. ·
Example: “Sorry, could I check whether you said Thursday or Tuesday?” A specific request is useful when one detail is missing. A fuller explanation may be needed if most of the message is unclear.
Use purpose and audience to locate the message. Keep each detail with its condition, and check uncertainty rather than inventing an action.
“Books due Friday may go in the weekend return box with no late fee” preserves a book category, an available time and a fee condition. It does not mean every book must be returned on Monday.
