Looking back with modals
- Past modals = modal verb + have + past participle.
- They let you guess, regret, or imagine about the past.
- He must have left. I should have called.
He must have forgotten the appointment; his calendar looked equally surprised.
用情态动词回看过去

- 过去情态动词 = 情态动词 + have + 过去分词。
- 它们让你对过去进行推测、表达遗憾或想象。
- 他He 一定must (完成)have 离开left.(他一定是走了。)

must have / can't have (deduction)
- must have + p.p. = you're sure it was true: He must have forgotten.
- can't have + p.p. = you're sure it wasn't: She can't have seen us.
- These are confident guesses about the past.
must have / can't have(推测)
- must have + 过去分词 = 你确定它当时是真的:He must have forgotten.
- can't have + 过去分词 = 你确定它当时不是:她She 不可能can't (完成)have 看见seen 我们us.(她不可能看见我们了。)
- 这是对过去有把握的推测。
He's not answering. He ___ his phone. (sure deduction) · 他不接电话。He ___ his phone。(确定的推测)
Past deduction → must have + past participle: “must have forgotten”. · 对过去的推测 → must have + 过去分词:must have forgotten。
Does “can't have + past participle” mean something was impossible in the past? · “can't have + 过去分词” 表示过去某事不可能发生,对吗?
Yes — “She can't have seen us” = it's impossible that she saw us. · 对 —— She can't have seen us = 她不可能看见我们了。
Translate into English: 他一定是忘了。 · 翻译成英语:他一定是忘了。

should have (regret, criticism)
- should have + p.p. = "the right thing to do, but it didn't happen".
- I should have studied harder. (regret)
- You shouldn't have said that. (criticism)
should have(遗憾、批评)
- should have + 过去分词 = "本该做、却没做"。
- 我I 本该should (完成)have 学习studied 更努力harder.(我本该更努力。)(遗憾)
- You shouldn't have said that.(你本不该那么说。)(批评)
Regret: I ___ have studied harder. (one modal verb) · 表达遗憾:I ___ have studied harder。(一个情态动词)
Past regret → should have + past participle: “I should have studied”. · 对过去的遗憾 → should have + 过去分词:I should have studied。
could have / might have (possibility)
- could / might have + p.p. = it was possible, but we're not sure.
- They might have missed the train. It could have been worse.
- could have can also mean "was able to, but didn't".
could have / might have(可能)
- could / might have + 过去分词 = 当时有可能,但不确定。
- They might have missed the train.(他们可能错过了火车。)
- could have 也可表示"本来能做却没做"。

Common mistakes
- ❌ He must forgot. → ✓ He must have forgotten. — past deduction = modal + have + participle.
- ❌ should of gone → ✓ should have gone. — of is a mis-heard have.
- ❌ I could help you yesterday, but I was busy. → ✓ I could have helped you. — unused past chance.

- ❌ should of gone → ✓ should have gone。—— 口语连读把 have 听成 of,写出来必须是 have。
- ❌ I could help you yesterday, but I was busy. → ✓ I could have helped you。—— "本可以却没做"用 could have done。
