    Despite the snow

    • The school sports day went ahead even though it was snowing.
    • despite尽管jǐn guǎn下着雪xià zhe xuě,sports competition运动会yùn dòng huìor / still还是hái shìas usual照常zhào chángto hold (a meeting…举行jǔ xíng(completed / change)了le。 — "Although it was snowing, the sports day still went ahead as planned."

despite尽管jǐn guǎn A,but但是dàn shì / but可是kě shì / or / still还是hái shì B

    • despite尽管jǐn guǎn A,(but但是dàn shì) B = "although / despite A, B": the fact A does not stop B.
    • The second clause often has but但是dàn shì, but可是kě shì, or / still还是hái shì, also也yě or but却què.

although尽管jǐn guǎnvery很hěntired累lèi,but但是dàn shìhe他tāstill还是hái shikept坚持jiān chírunning跑pǎoto the end完wán了le。

    尽管 …,还是 …: even though

    A fact, not a possibility

    • despite尽管jǐn guǎnhe / him他tādegree / adjective linker很hěnto make an effort努力nǔ lì,but可是kě shìachievement成绩chéng jìor / still还是hái shìnot so good不太好bù tài hǎo。 — "Although he works hard, his grades still aren't very good."
    • despite尽管jǐn guǎn states something true; for "even if" (maybe true), use even if即使jí shǐ.

although尽管jǐn guǎnhe他tāvery很hěnhard-working努力nǔ lì,but可是kě shìgrades成绩chéng jìstill还是hái shinot very不太bú tàigood好hǎo。

despite尽管jǐn guǎn versus despite尽管jǐn guǎn + Verb

    • despite尽管jǐn guǎn at the start of a clause = "although". Before a verb, despite尽管jǐn guǎn = "feel free to": to have / there is有yǒuquestion问题wèn tídespite尽管jǐn guǎnto ask问wèn.
    • Do not combine despite尽管jǐn guǎn with even if即使jí shǐ or although虽然suī rán in the same clause; one is enough.

    despite尽管jǐn guǎn versus although虽然suī rán

    • although虽然suī rán is the everyday "although": although虽然suī ránto rain下雨xià yǔ,we / us我们wǒ menor / still还是hái shìto go去qù(completed / change)了le.
    • despite尽管jǐn guǎn is a bit stronger and more formal, and stresses that the fact really holds.

although虽然suī ránit rained下雨xià yǔ,we我们wǒ menstill还是hái shiwent去qù了le。

    Recap

    • despite尽管jǐn guǎn A,but但是dàn shì / or / still还是hái shì B = although A (a fact), B anyway.
    • despite尽管jǐn guǎn + Verb = feel free to; even if即使jí shǐ = even if (hypothetical).

Practise this pattern step by step.

to invert倒dào (actually / on the contrary)

    Not what you'd expect

    • Your friend expected the small restaurant to be cheap, but it was pricey and the fancy one was cheap.
    • 这家zhè jiāsmall小xiǎorestaurant饭馆fàn guǎnto invert倒dàostraight挺tǐngexpensive贵guì(modifier / structural particle)的de。 — "This little restaurant is actually quite expensive (surprisingly)."

    • to invert倒dào marks a result opposite to what you would expect: "actually, on the contrary".
    • It sits after the subject, before the verb or adjective: he / him他tāto invert倒dàonot不bùto worry着急zháo jí.

    everyone大家dà jiāall都dōuvery很hěnworried担心dān xīn,he他tāactually倒dàonot不bùanxious着急zháo jí。

倒: contrary to what you'd expect

    Softening or conceding

    • thing东西dōng xīto invert倒dàoto be / is是shìcorrect不错bù cuò,exactly就是jiù shì太贵tài guì(completed / change)了le。 — "The goods are fine, it's just that they're too expensive." (to invert倒dàoto be / is是shì concedes a point before a "but")
    • you你nǐvariant of 说说shuō(degree marker)得deto invert倒dàoeasy容易róng yì! — "That's easy for you to say!" (ironic)

the goods东西dōng xiadmittedly倒是dào shìfine不错bú cuò,it's just that就是jiù shìtoo太tàiexpensive贵guì了le。

    Contrast with an expectation

    • to invert倒dào needs an expectation to go against (stated or obvious); without one it sounds odd.
    • It goes after the subject: he / him他tāto invert倒dàonot不bùto worry着急zháo jí, not to invert倒dàohe / him他tānot不bùto worry着急zháo jí.

to invert倒dào versus but却què and on the contrary反而fǎn ér

    • but却què = "but, yet", a plain contrast: he / him他tādegree / adjective linker很hěnrope累lèi,but却què睡不着shuì bù zhe.
    • on the contrary反而fǎn ér = "on the contrary, instead", stronger: variant of 吃吃chī(completed / change)了lemedicine药yào,illness病bìngon the contrary反而fǎn ér更重gèng zhòng(completed / change)了le.

    take吃chī了lemedicine药yào,the illness病bìnginstead反而fǎn éreven more更gèngserious重zhòng了le。

    Recap

    • to invert倒dào + predicate = actually (contrary to expectation); to invert倒dàoto be / is是shì…,exactly就是jiù shì… = granted …, but ….
    • but却què = plain contrast; on the contrary反而fǎn ér = the opposite happened.

Practise this pattern step by step.

    • he / him他tādegree / adjective linker很hěnwell-off有钱yǒu qián,but却quènot不bùhappy快乐kuài lè — "He's rich, but he isn't happy."

    he他tāvery很hěnrich有钱yǒu qián,yet却quènot不búhappy快乐kuài lè。

却: but, yet (before the verb)

With but但是dàn shì / but可是kě shì

    • It can follow but但是dàn shì: I / me我wǒwant / think / miss想xiǎngto help帮bānghe / him他tā,but但是dàn shìhe / him他tābut却quènot不bùto need需要xū yào。 — "I wanted to help him, but he didn't need it."
    • It often appears in writing and stories.

    I我wǒwanted to想xiǎnghelp帮bānghim他tā,but但是dàn shìhe他tāyet却quènot不bùneed it需要xū yào。

    but却què never comes first

    • but却què is an adverb: it goes after the subject, never at the start: he / him他tābut却quènot不bùto come来lái, not but却quèhe / him他tānot不bùto come来lái.
    • but但是dàn shì starts the clause; but却què follows the subject. They can be used together.

    but却què versus but但是dàn shì

    • but但是dàn shì is the general "but" and opens the clause.
    • but却què stresses the surprising contrast and sits inside the clause: day天tiāndegree / adjective linker很hěncold冷lěng,he / him他tābut却quèonly只zhǐto wear穿chuān(completed / change)了le一件yī jiànTvariant of 恤恤xù.

    it天tiānvery很hěncold冷lěng,he他tāyet却quèonly只zhǐwore穿chuān了lea一件yí jiànT-shirtT恤T xù。

    Answers and explanations

despite尽管jǐn guǎn … ,but但是dàn shì … (although)

    1501.1 despite尽管jǐn guǎn

despite尽管jǐn guǎn A,but可是kě shì … or / still还是hái shì B.

    1501.4 True.

For a hypothetical “even if”, use even if即使jí shǐ.

1501.5 One possible response: despite尽管jǐn guǎn下着雪xià zhe xuě,sports competition运动会yùn dòng huìor / still还是hái shìas usual照常zhào chángto hold (a meeting…举行jǔ xíng(completed / change)了le。

    Check meaning and form:

    • My response conveys a message that fits the opening situation.
    • I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
    • I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.

This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.

to invert倒dào (actually / on the contrary)

    1502.1 to invert倒dào

    Check meaning and form:

    • My response conveys a message that fits the opening situation.
    • I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
    • to invert倒dào needs an expectation to go against (stated or obvious); without one it sounds odd.

    • I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.

This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.

but却què + Predicate (however / yet)

    1503.1 but却què

but却què after the subject marks the contrast.

    1503.2 A. he / him他tādegree / adjective linker很hěnintelligent聪明cōng míng,he / him他tābut却quènot不bùto make an effort努力nǔ lì。

he / him他tādegree / adjective linker很hěnintelligent聪明cōng míng,he / him他tābut却quènot不bùto make an effort努力nǔ lì is right: but却què is an adverb, so it goes after the subject of its clause. Unlike but但是dàn shì, it can never start the clause.

    1503.3 I / me我wǒwant / think / miss想xiǎngto help帮bānghe / him他tā,but但是dàn shìhe / him他tābut却quènot不bùto need需要xū yào。
