Computing touches almost every part of life, and the same tool brings benefits and harms — not one or the other, both at once.
Social media lets you stay in touch, share what you make, and learn from anyone anywhere.
The same platform carries bullying, spreads false news fast, and costs people sleep.
A benefit for one group can be a harm for another, so the question is always: who gains, who loses, and what could go wrong?
The digital divide is the gap between people who have good access to computing and people who do not.
Three things cause it: money, because devices and data cost; where you live, because fast Internet does not reach everywhere; and training, because access without skills is not much use.
This is unfair — people without access miss out on school, jobs, and information.
Bias means an unfair result that favours one group over another, and it is not usually somebody being deliberately unfair.
Software learns from data.
Look at the pile on the left: mostly one kind of example, a few of another.
A face tool trained on that works well for the group it saw most, and badly for other people.
If the data is unfair or incomplete, the results can be unfair too.
Last, whose work is it.
Intellectual property is creative work people make — code, music, art, writing.
A licence is the rules for how others may use that work.
Open source shares its code so others may read and reuse it, and Creative Commons licences let a creator say "you may share this, with these conditions".
Using someone's work without permission can break the law, so check the licence first.
Four things to take with you.
One: every technology has benefits and harms together.
Two: the digital divide is unequal access to computing.
Three: bias in the data becomes bias in the results.
Four: a licence decides how you may reuse someone's work.
Now work through the impact tasks below.
