The listening and reading habits that decide level-one questions. Hear the whole phrase before you choose, because a familiar noun alone is insufficient. Read the whole sentence, including bu and mei, before you match a picture or a reply. And match the right fact to the right question word, a number to ji, a person to shei, a place to nar.
The classic listening pair: nüer he shui, the daughter drinks water, and nüer chi fan, the daughter eats a meal. Both share a person but describe different actions, which is why a familiar noun alone is insufficient. For picture choices, identify who is present, what the person does, and any visible quantity, then listen to the entire phrase before selecting. And the fairness rule from the notes: in classroom listening, the teacher keeps the script hidden and gives every learner the same delivery.
The question word names the fact you owe. Ji asks a number, shei asks a person, nar asks a place. A reply Beijing answers a place question; san ge ren answers a quantity question; swapped, both are wrong no matter how true they are. And read the whole utterance, including bu and mei, before matching, because one negative flips the polarity of the whole sentence.
The rehearsal drill, teacher-read with the script hidden: zhuozi shang you liang ge beizi. Choose between a table with two cups and a table with three books. Correct: two cups, because you states existence, liang ge counts cups, and zhuozi shang locates them, three facts heard in one phrase. A printed copy would test reading, not listening. On feedback, reveal the script and name the contrast that caused the error, then practise a new case, never the identical exposed item, because the exposed item is memorised and the new case tests the skill. Record correct meaning separately from character recognition.
Two final cautions. First, a matching object does not rescue the wrong quantity: a picture of books with the right colour still loses to the two cups, because quantity is one of the facts being tested. Second, do not claim a visible-script task proves listening ability; reading a printed script is a different skill, and the held-out teacher-read task is the evidence of listening performance.
Pause and check both. First, the action differs, drinking versus eating; the person is the same daughter. Second, shei asks a person, while ji asks a number. The remaining review items: you states existence in zhuozi shang you liang ge beizi, and the reason for practising a new case after feedback is transfer, because the exposed item is memorised, not understood. Hear the whole phrase, read the whole sentence, and the level-one tasks are yours.
