Registers, counters, memory
- A register loads n bits per edge; a shift register marches bits along (serial↔parallel conversion). Synchronous counters toggle bit k when all lower bits are 1 (up) — $2^n$ states is the count check.
- Memory: k address lines address $2^k$ words — 8K×8 needs 13 address lines.

A 4-bit synchronous up-counter bit 2 toggles when —

Bit k toggles when all lower bits are 1 (that is when they roll over). The count sequence 000…111 with 2^4 = 16 states is the check.
A mod-6 counter must return to 000 from 101. The cleanest reset condition is —

Legal counts 000-101 never have Q2=Q1=1 together, so Q2 AND Q1 detects exactly the unused states and clears to 000. Mod-N design = count range check + unused-state handling.
An 8K x 8 memory needs how many address lines?

k address bits select one of 2^k words: 8192 = 2^13, so 13 lines; the 8 is the word width (data lines), not the address.
