The new haircut
- Your friend got a short haircut and now everyone says she looks different.

appear显得 + description = come across as, appear (in effect)
- appear显得 says how something comes across, often because of a cause or comparison: appear显得more更spacious大, appear显得very很nervous紧张.
- It often follows makes让 / to make使 or a cause: white白色makes让the room房间appear显得more更spacious大.

Complete: “The white walls make the room look bigger.” 白色的墙让房间____更大。

A cause producing an effect: 显得.
looks看起来 = looks (a direct impression)
- looks看起来 reports your direct impression: she她looks看起来very很happy高兴.
- appear显得 adds that something (a colour, a situation, a contrast) produces this effect.

Cause + 让 + person + 显得 + description.
Effect versus impression
- Use appear显得 when a cause or contrast produces the look: among在crowd人群to hit (the mark)中appear显得very很low矮 — "looks short in the crowd".
- appear显得 takes a description, not an object: she她appear显得very很young年轻, not appear显得she她young年轻.
Which stresses contrast? “Among the adults, he seems especially small.”

显得 fits an effect produced by contrast.
In context and contrast
- among在一群adults大人(middle)中间，he他appear显得especially特别small小。 — "Among a group of adults, he seems especially small."
- he他looks看起来very很small小 just reports your impression.

看起来 simply reports a direct impression.
