whereas而 versus but但是
- but但是 makes a "but": the second part goes against the first.
- whereas而 often just sets two facts side by side: he他studies学law法律，whereas而I我to study medicine学医 — "He studies law, while I study medicine."

而 can simply set two facts side by side without a strong “but”.
