- You are reading a short story aloud: the rain stopped, and the children rushed outside.

Event，so于是 + next event
- so于是 = "thereupon, and so": the second event happens because of, and right after, the first.
- It is used for past events in narration: he他hungry饿(completed / change)了，so于是went去buy买(completed / change)了a一个bread roll面包.

Complete: “He was hungry, so he went to buy some bread.” 他饿了，____去买了面包。

于是 tells what he did next.
Telling a story step by step
- he他heard听说that那家shop店very很famous有名，so于是decided决定went去try it试试。 — "He heard the shop was famous, so he decided to try it."
- so于是 makes the story flow: event → reaction.

Event, then 于是 + decision.
Past narration only
- so于是 tells what someone did next; it is not for plans, rules or advice: if如果it rained下雨，we / us我们then / just就not不went去, not so于是we / us我们not不went去.
- It starts the second clause, usually before the subject if there is a new one: so于是we / us我们to return home回家(completed / change)了.
Which sentence uses 于是 correctly?

于是 narrates the next past action.
so于是 versus so所以
- so所以 gives a logical result and fits any tense: because因为it rained下雨，so所以the match比赛cancelled取消(completed / change)了.
- so于是 moves a story forward with an action someone took: it rained下雨(completed / change)了，so于是we / us我们to return home回家(completed / change)了.
because因为it rained下雨，so所以the match比赛cancelled取消了。
于是 is suitable for general rules about the future.

It narrates what happened next in the past.
