Scale lengths, square the area
- A map is enlarged so every distance grows by 30%. The inked area grows by $1.3^2 - 1 = 69\%$, not 60%.
- GRE geometry tests similar 相似的 triangles (with the right correspondence), scale factors and conics as distance loci.
Similarity: match angles first
- Equal angles give equal side ratios — between corresponding sides. Write the vertex correspondence.
$AB = 10$, $AC = 15$, $BC = 20$. $P$ on $AB$ with $AP = 6$; $Q$ on $AC$ with $\angle APQ = \angle ACB$. Correspondence $A \leftrightarrow A$, $P \leftrightarrow C$, $Q \leftrightarrow B$, so $\frac{AP}{AC} = \frac{AQ}{AB} = \frac{PQ}{CB} = \frac25$: $AQ = 4$, $PQ = 8$.
In the worked example, if instead $AP = 9$, what is $PQ$?

The correspondence is P ↔ C, so PQ/CB = AP/AC. With AP = 9, AC = 15 and CB = 20: PQ = (9/15) × 20 = 12.
Scale factors
- Lengths ×$k$, areas ×$k^2$, volumes ×$k^3$. Similar solids with volume ratio 27 have length ratio 3 and surface ratio 9.
- Write the new-to-old ratio before converting to a percentage.
Which power of k?
Scale lengths, areas and volumes correctly.
Every length of a figure is increased by 20%. By what percentage does its area increase?

Area scales with the square of the length factor: 1.2² = 1.44, an increase of 44%, not 40%.
Two similar solids have volumes in ratio 8 : 125. What is the ratio of their surface areas, smaller to larger, as a decimal?

Length ratio 2 : 5, area 4 : 25.
Conics as loci
- Circle: fixed distance to a point. Ellipse: fixed sum $2a$ of distances to two foci ($a > c$). Hyperbola 双曲线: fixed difference $2a$ ($a < c$). Parabola: distance to focus 焦点 = distance to directrix.
- Hyperbola with foci $(\pm c, 0)$: $\frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1$, $c^2 = a^2 + b^2$. Ellipse: $c^2 = a^2 - b^2$.
Match each locus to its conic.

Definitions as point sets.
For $\frac{x^2}{16} - \frac{y^2}{9} = 1$, the foci are $(\pm c, 0)$. Find $c$.
Độ khó 2/5 · 140 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
For a hyperbola x²/a² − y²/b² = 1, c² = a² + b² (an ellipse uses a² − b²): c² = 16 + 9 = 25, so c = 5.
The sign picks a branch
- Foci $(\pm5, 0)$; distance to the left focus minus distance to the right $= 6$: $a = 3$, $b^2 = 16$, and only the branch $x \ge 3$.
- $(-3, 0)$ satisfies $\frac{x^2}{9} - \frac{y^2}{16} = 1$ but gives difference $2 - 8 = -6$. Squaring lost the sign.
Every point satisfying $\frac{x^2}{9} - \frac{y^2}{16} = 1$ has distance to $(-5,0)$ minus distance to $(5,0)$ equal to $+6$.

Points on the left branch give −6; squaring lost the sign.
Recap
- Match angles, then pair corresponding sides.
- Areas scale by $k^2$, volumes by $k^3$.
- Sum → ellipse, difference → hyperbola; a signed difference selects one branch.
- similar: Having equal corresponding angles and proportional corresponding sides.
