Continuous vs simple
- Continuous → the activity / duration: I've been reading (it may be continuing or have just stopped).
- Simple can focus on a completed result: I've read it. It can also describe a continuing state: I've known her for years.
- For a state meaning such as knowing a person, use I've known her, not I've been knowing her. Some verbs also have action meanings, so decide from the use rather than a permanent ban on the word.
Choose from the meaning in context
Choose a perfect form from the verb meaning in these examples.
Is this correct? “I have been knowing him for years.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Knowing a person is a state meaning here: I have known him for years. Do not turn this example into a ban on every continuous use of every verb with a state meaning.
Common mistakes
- If the wait began an hour ago and continues now, use I have been waiting for an hour. A duration does not always require the perfect: I waited for an hour yesterday is also correct.
- ❌ How long are you living here? → ✓ How long have you been living here?
- To say she completed her task, use She has finished. But been is not restricted to -ing: She has been busy describes a state, and The work has been finished is passive. Those are different patterns, not errors merely because been is present.
Put the words in order to make a question.

How long + have + subject + been + -ing: “How long have you been waiting?”
You want to emphasise the completed total: three books this week. Does I have been reading three books this week clearly express that completed total?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
No. I have read three books this week directly expresses the completed total. The continuous can describe work on three books without establishing that all three were finished.
- have / has been + verb-ing focuses on activity continuing up to now or stopping recently.
- for + a duration; since + a starting point.
- Focus on the activity, not the finished result.
