A passing overall can still miss a section condition
- A fictional course requires overall 6.5 and every skill at least 6. In Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking order, Lina has 7, 7, 5.5, 6.5. Their sum is 26; the mean and reported overall are 6.5. Writing still misses the section floor.
- With 7, 7, 6, 6.5, the mean becomes 6.625 and the reported overall remains 6.5, while the fictional section condition is met. An improvement can matter without changing the overall. An average is a summary, not a permission slip.
What is the mean of the reported section bands 7, 7, 5.5 and 6.5?
26 ÷ 4 = 6.5; Writing still misses the fictional floor of 6.
What overall is reported from 7, 7, 6 and 6.5 under the published nearest-half rule?
26.5 ÷ 4 = 6.625, nearer 6.5 than 7; the section floor is now met.
Match preparation to the evidence it produces
- Academic IELTS is used for degree-level study and professional registration. Listening and Reading need answers grounded in audio or text; Writing needs actual responses; Speaking needs actual spoken responses. Check the receiving organisation’s accepted test and conditions.
- A learner’s 30 of 40 in an original Reading drill is 75% raw accuracy on that drill, not evidence of pronunciation or an official score. Published Listening/Reading band anchors are approximate; precise thresholds can vary by test version.
What raw percentage is 30 correct out of 40 in this original fixed drill?
30 ÷ 40 × 100 = 75%; this is not an official band.
Listening and Reading have different time rules
- Listening has four parts and forty questions, with recordings heard once and an approximate 30-minute base. Computer answers are entered as you go; follow the displayed checking time. Older paper samples include ten minutes to transfer Listening answers, which is not the computer routine.
- Academic Reading has three sections, forty questions and sixty minutes, including any answer entry or transfer. There is no extra Reading transfer period. Practise entering an answer against its question number rather than leaving all entry until the end.
How many questions are in the IELTS Listening test?
Listening has 4 parts with 10 questions each: 40 questions.
Plan Writing around the two different demands
- Academic Task 1 describes visual information in at least 150 words; Task 2 develops an essay response in at least 250 words. Writing lasts sixty minutes. About twenty minutes for Task 1 and forty for Task 2 is the published allocation advice, not separate clocks supplied by this lesson.
- Task 2 carries twice Task 1’s weight. Read the task and preserve time for both responses and checking. A chart description cannot replace an essay, and a longer response is not automatically a better one.
Complete: Writing Task 2 needs at least ___ words.
Task 1 needs at least 150 words, Task 2 at least 250.
Which Writing task counts for more of your Writing score?
Task 2 is worth two thirds of the Writing mark, Task 1 one third. Give Task 2 its full 40 minutes.
Speaking needs recorded delivery
- Speaking lasts eleven to fourteen minutes with an examiner: familiar-topic questions, a long turn and a related discussion. Delivery arrangements can include video-call Speaking; check the booked mode instead of assuming every interview is physically in the same room.
- The overall averages the four reported bands and rounds to the nearest half band; a mean ending .25 rounds up to the next half, and .75 to the next whole. A typed speaking draft can show ideas but cannot establish actual pronunciation or spoken pace.
IELTS Speaking is conducted with an examiner, rather than replaced by a typed essay.
It is an examiner interview; booked arrangements can include video-call Speaking. A typed response cannot establish spoken delivery.
Match each section to its time.
Reading and Writing are 60 minutes each; Speaking is the shortest part.
Check the booking, requirement and diagnosed error
- IELTS announced a transition away from paper-based testing from mid-2026, with exact dates varying by market; selected markets offer Writing on Paper within IELTS on computer. That option does not turn Listening and Reading back into paper tests. Check current centre options and receiving acceptance before booking.
- Recap: check each named condition, then choose practice that supplies missing evidence. Facts checked on 2 October 2026: IELTS scoring, Listening format, Academic format, delivery update. Cases and percentages here are original teaching examples.
- Use the actual reported result and receiving policy; our drill percentages do not predict official bands or admission outcomes.
Match the distinctions in this worked case.
The student needs a writing diagnosis, not just more reading because it feels comfortable. Check task fulfilment and language in a real draft, then plan targeted practice.
For this fictional offer, which score falls below the required section floor?
