Judgement hides in the adjective
- The long-delayed report has evaluated the report while appearing only to identify it.
- The word long-delayed was not required to point at anything.
- A modifier is where a writer's judgement enters a sentence without announcing itself.
An adjective can deliver a verdict while pretending it only came to label the folder.
Julgamento esconde-se no adjetivo
- O relatório de longa demora avaliou o relatório enquanto aparenta apenas identificá-lo.
- A palavra longa-demorado não era necessária para apontar qualquer coisa.
- Um modificador é onde o julgamento do escritor entra na oração sem anunciar.
Um adjetivo pode proferir um veredito fingindo que veio apenas para rotular a pasta.
What a modifier does
- Modifiers 修饰成分 — words, phrases or clauses — qualify, clarify or specify information about the thing they modify.
- Those are three different jobs: narrowing, making precise, and picking out.
- Ask which job a modifier is doing, and whether it also smuggled in a judgement.
O que um modificador faz
- Modificadores 修饰成分 — palavras, frases ou orações — qualificam, esclarecem ou especificam informações sobre a coisa que modificam.
- São três funções diferentes: restringir, tornar preciso e destacar.
- Pergunte qual trabalho um modificador está fazendo e se ele também introduziu sutilmente um julgamento.
Modifier or parenthetical, and what does it do? · Modificador ou elemento parenético, e o que ele faz?
Sort each element by the job it performs. · Classifique cada elemento pelo trabalho que ele executa.
Select all · todos the jobs the CED says a modifier does. · Selecione todos os trabalhos que a CED diz que um modificador faz.
Concluding is not a modifier's job. · Concluir não é o trabalho de um modificador.
Parenthetical elements
- Parenthetical elements 插入成分 — though not essential to understanding what they describe — interrupt a sentence.
- They add information, comment or emphasis.
- The CED's phrase not essential is the key: a parenthetical is material the writer chose to include anyway.
Elementos parentéticos
- Elementos parentéticos 插入成分 — embora não essenciais para entender o que descrevem — interrompem uma oração.
- Adicionam informação, comentário ou ênfase.
- A frase do CED não essencial é a chave: um elemento parentético é material que o escritor escolheu incluir de qualquer forma.
A parenthetical element is essential to understanding what it describes. · Um elemento parenético é essencial para entender o que descreve.
The CED says it is not essential — which is why including one is a choice. · A CED diz que é não essencial — é por isso que incluí-lo é uma escolha.
A parenthetical is not essential, by the CED's own definition — which is exactly why including one is a choice worth analysing. Treating it as filler misses that the writer stopped the sentence on purpose, and chose where to stop it.
Um elemento parentético não é essencial, pela própria definição do CED — que é exatamente por isso que incluí-lo é uma escolha digna de análise. Tratá-lo como preenchimento perde o fato de o escritor ter parado a oração de propósito, e ter escolhido onde parar.
A parenthetical creates emphasis because... · Um elemento parenético cria ênfase porque...
The reader is stopped, and what stops them is thereby marked. · O leitor é parado, e o que o para fica marcado assim.
The interruption is the point
- Because a parenthetical is inessential, including it is a decision.
- The interruption itself creates emphasis — the reader is stopped, and what stops them is marked.
- Placement matters too: a parenthetical before a key word makes the reader wait for it.
A interrupção é o ponto
- Por ser inessencial, incluí-lo é uma decisão.
- A própria interrupção cria ênfase — o leitor é detido, e o que o detém é marcado.
- A colocação também importa: um elemento parentético antes de uma palavra-chave faz o leitor esperar por ela.
To analyse a modifier, ask what the sentence would say ____ it. · Para analisar um modificador, pergunte o que a frase diria ____ ele.
The difference between the two versions is the judgement the writer added. · A diferença entre as duas versões é o julgamento que o escritor adicionou.
Match each question to what it uncovers. · Combine cada pergunta com o que ela descobre.
Each question turns a grammatical feature into a rhetorical choice. · Cada pergunta transforma um recurso gramatical em uma escolha retórica.
Analysing both
- For a modifier: what would the sentence say without it? The difference is the judgement.
- For a parenthetical: why was inessential material included, and why here?
- Both questions turn a grammatical feature into a rhetorical choice.
Analisando ambos
- Para um modificador: o que a oração diria sem ele? A diferença é o julgamento.
- Para um elemento parentético: por que material inessencial foi incluído, e por que aqui?
- Ambas as perguntas transformam uma característica gramatical em uma escolha retórica.
"The results, such as they were, arrived on schedule." The parenthetical dismisses the results in four words without arguing against them, and placing it before the praise means the compliment lands on something the reader has already been told to discount.
"Os resultados, na medida em que foram, chegaram no prazo." O elemento parentético descarta os resultados em quatro palavras sem argumentar contra eles, e colocá-los antes do elogio faz com que o elogio recaia sobre algo que o leitor já foi instruído a desvalorizar.
Modifiers qualify, clarify or specify — and are where judgement enters a sentence unannounced. Parenthetical elements are not essential yet interrupt to add information, comment or emphasis. Analyse both by asking what the sentence would say without them, and why they sit here.
Modificadores qualificam, esclarecem ou especificam — e são onde o julgamento entra na oração sem anúncio. Elementos parentéticos são não essenciais contudo interrompem para adicionar informação, comentário ou ênfase. Analise-os perguntando o que a oração diria sem eles, e por que estão aqui.
