给 vs 为 (to/for vs for the sake of)

Hand it to them, or do it for them?

  • Both can mean "for" — but they aim differently.
  • to / for / givegěi = to / for (often a recipient): to / for / givegěiI / meto buymǎi = "buy (it) for me", to / for / givegěihe / himto make a telephone call打电话 diàn huà = "call him".
  • forwèi = for the sake of (a benefit / motive): forwèihello你好 hǎo = "for your own good".
