Separable verbs (离合词)
Verbs that split apart
- Some "verbs" are really Verb + Noun, and they split: to meet见面, to help帮忙, to go to bed睡觉.
- to appear见(completed / change)了one side一面 = "met once"; 帮个busy忙 = "do a favour".
- Extra words slide into the middle, not after.
Verb-part + (extra) + Noun-part
- Insert a measure word, (completed / change)了, or a duration between the two halves.
we我们meet见了one一(time)面。
- to appear见(completed / change)了one side一面 = "met once" (to appear见…flour面 splits).
Practice
How do you say “met once” with 见面?
见面 splits: extra words go inside → 见了一面.
Practice
Met once: 我们见了一 ____。
见…面 splits around 了 + measure: 见了一面.
Don't add an object after
- to help帮忙 can't take an object directly — say to help帮I / me我(of / 's)的busy忙 / to help帮I / me我.
