Hello: names and a first exchange

Your first short exchange
- Outcome: say hello and give an invented name. No earlier English unit is required. If the letters are unfamiliar, use a teacher or partner for support.
- Five starter units begin this course. The written checks are not listening tests; the speaking box uses your own local recording, without a recorded pronunciation model.
Hello and goodbye
- “Hello. Hi.” — 你好. “Goodbye.” — 再见.
- Example: “A: Hello. B: Hi.” Both people greet.
Choose a greeting.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Hello starts an exchange here. Goodbye ends it; two is a number.
A name
- “Hello. I’m Mina.” Mina is the speaker’s name 姓名. “I’m” means “I am”.
- Another form: “My name is Mina.” Use an invented name for practice.
Hello. I’m Mina.
Read. What is the speaker’s name?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
I’m Mina gives the speaker’s name. Hello is the greeting, not the name.
One word: My ___ is Mina.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
My name is introduces the name. Keep name between My and is.
Ask for a name
- “What’s your name?” asks for a name. A short answer is “I’m Omar.”
- Worked repair: your role is Ali. “I’m Mina.” copies a different name; use “I’m Ali.”
Match the words to their use here.
Difficulty 2/5 · 140 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Hello greets; goodbye ends this exchange. These are two useful examples, not the only possible greetings or endings.
Read new little exchanges
- Read the English words beside each question. Keep A’s and B’s names separate.
- Choose before opening feedback. Read again if you mix up the names.
A: Hello. I’m Jin. B: Hi. I’m Noor.
Read. What is A’s name?

A says I’m Jin. Noor is B’s name; Hi is a greeting.
A: Hello. I’m Jin. B: Hi. I’m Noor.
Read. What is B’s name?

B says I’m Noor. Keep each name with its speaker.
Your role: Ali. Mina: What’s your name?
Your role is Ali. Answer the question.

Use the name on your role card. Mina is the other person’s name; goodbye does not give your name.
Choose the question that asks for a name.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
What’s your name? asks for a name. Hi and goodbye do different jobs.
Hi. I’m Noor.
The speaker’s name is Hi.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Hi is a greeting. Noor is the name after I’m.
Your role: Mina. Omar: Hello. I’m Omar. What’s your name?
Your role is Mina. Give your name.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Give your own role name, Mina. Do not copy the other person’s name.
A new name
- Your new role is Ben. Choose a greeting and that name. Then write two short lines for Ali before opening the model.
- Check greeting + name. Copying another person’s name changes the meaning.
New role: Ben. Choose a greeting and your name.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The response greets and gives Ben, the new role name. Other greeting/name wording can also work.
Your role is Ali. Write a greeting and your name in English. Then compare. You can use two short sentences.
Compare with the meaning and checklist. A model is one possibility; this self-review does not check every answer or award proficiency.
Say your role name
- Your printed role is Lee. Greet the visitor and give that name aloud.
- Record, replay and try one repair if useful. Alone this is rehearsal; a partner can ask the question and hear your reply.
Printed role: you are Lee. A visitor asks What’s your name? Say a greeting and your role name in English. Record before showing guidance; invented details only.
Say the response aloud. With a partner, respond to what they actually say; alone this is rehearsal from a printed cue. Recording, replay and comparison are local self-review, not a pronunciation or listening score.
Come back later
- Tomorrow, complete the new Tao sentence before rereading the examples. Then greet someone with another invented name.
- Next: numbers zero to ten. For longer introductions later: A1 introductions.
Course note: these are original starter examples. Pre-A1 is an intended teaching target, not a validated placement result or complete level course. Council of Europe descriptor information checked 21 October 2026; it does not approve this local course. Independent language, answer, recording/accessibility and learner reviews remain pending.
Later, one word: My ___ is Tao.

Name keeps the same useful frame with a different invented name. Do not copy Mina from the first example.
