Reading: notes, signs and messages
IntroducedYour saved position stays in this browser. Resuming does not complete the lesson or answer its questions.
Reading is everywhere
- You already read English every day: signs, notes, messages.
- OPEN 9:00–21:00 · NO PARKING · OUT OF ORDER · SALE: Friday to Sunday
- A sign says a lot in very few words. OUT OF ORDER = broken, not working.
Sign: rule or information?
Some signs tell you what NOT to do; others simply tell you facts.
Match each sign to its meaning.
Difficulty 2/5 · 140 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Signs use very few words — learn the fixed phrases.
A note at home
- Tom — Milk is in the fridge. Eggs are on the table. Bread is in the cupboard. See you at six. — Mum
- Find the facts: what is it about, where is each thing?
Read the fridge note. Where are the eggs?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
“Eggs are on the table.”
A text message
- Hi Ann, class is at 4 today, not 5. Room 203, second floor. Bring your book. — Mr. Lee
- Messages often change a plan: at 4, not 5.
True or false? Class is at 5 today.

An invitation
- Dear Wang Fang, Please come to my birthday party on Saturday at 3 pm. 25 Garden Road. Bring a friend! Love, Anna
- Four questions answer almost everything: who, what, where, when.
Complete: The birthday party is on ___ at 3 pm.

Who is the invitation for?

come to + event + on + day.
Read for the answer, not every word
- You do not need to translate every word. Ask: who is it for? what must I do? where? when?
- Names, times and places carry the message. The rest is support.
- Unknown word? Read past it — the sentence usually explains it.
Common traps
- ❌ OUT OF ORDER = "out of the order" → ✓ not working / broken — a fixed phrase.
- ❌ Sale: Friday to Sunday ends on Friday → ✓ it runs Friday to Sunday — Sunday is the last day.
- ❌ Bring a friend! = bring all your friends → ✓ one friend is welcome.
Write a fridge note to your family (2–3 lines): say where two things are and when you will be back.
Difficulty 3/5 · 200 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Example: “Milk is in the fridge. Bread is on the table. See you at seven.”
Your turn
- Read the fridge note again. Say three facts without looking: where is the milk? the eggs? the bread?
- Write your own fridge note in English (2–3 lines): tell your family where two things are and when you will be back.
Keep the reading working
- Tomorrow, before you reopen this page: find one sign or label in English (a packet, a door, an app) and read it out loud.
- Next in this course: word stress and rhythm. Listening practice: names, numbers and introductions.
