English

Getting things done by others

The causative
  • In an arranged-service context, have/get + object + participle can describe a job done by someone else. The frame has other uses too; do not infer an arrangement from its shape alone.
  • At the salon, I had my hair cut describes an arranged haircut.
  • Outcome: describe a service, an unwanted event or a completed result without inventing who arranged or paid for it. Start with passive forms. Starting check: does They had their bags stolen mean they hired a thief? It can describe an unwanted experience.
  • It's different from doing it yourself.

I had my hair cut; the hairdresser handled the difficult part.
