Speaking: introductions and meeting people

Make a short introduction understood
- Use this page to introduce yourself, spell a name and say where someone is from. Start with names and numbers listening if those details are difficult to catch.
- The recorded boxes provide model rehearsal: hear → say → record → replay → compare. Changing the details gives you a useful next step; copying a model alone does not show independent conversation.
- Recordings stay in this page and disappear on reload. They are not uploaded or scored. Compare a specific detail or sound; do not assume the second recording is better.
Saying your name
- Use My name is … or I'm …. Keep the name clear; you may need to repeat it for a listener who is unfamiliar with it.
- In name is, the /m/ belongs to name. Let the words join without changing name into nay. There is no need to imitate an English respelling of the vowel.
- Practice box 1 rehearses the existing model. Afterward, use your own name or an invented name you are comfortable sharing aloud.
Hear the model, then record yourself saying it.
Rehearse the phrase slowly if useful, then use your own or an invented name. Intelligibility matters more than copying a respelling or speed.
Spelling a name aloud
- Say the letters separately: A — N — N — A. A short pause can help separate the name from its spelling.
- Some letter names rhyme, such as A, J, K. Listen for the letter itself; use repetition or an example word if a listener confuses two letters.
- Practice box 2 rehearses the spelling. Then spell a different name without copying Anna's letters.
Now with the spelling. Record the whole sentence.
Say the letters distinctly. You may pause or repeat; there is no single required pause pattern for spelling a name.
Meeting people
- Nice to meet you. One friendly response is Nice to meet you too. Other replies, such as You too, can also complete the exchange.
- What's your name? asks for a name. In connected speech, sounds may join or change; you do not need to force a particular wut-CHUR pronunciation.
- Practice box 3 rehearses both sides. With a partner, take one role at a time and listen to their actual answer.
Record the greeting and its answer.
Nice to meet you too is one possible reply. You too and other friendly responses can also complete an exchange; too is not compulsory in every response.
Saying where someone is from
- Use I'm from + place: I'm from Beijing. I'm from China. You can use fictional details for practice.
- I'm contains an /m/ sound. Keep that contrast with I without treating the spelling aim as a pronunciation guide: aim is a different word with a different vowel.
- Practice box 4 rehearses the two model sentences; then change the name and place.
Say where the speaker is from. Record both sentences.
I’m and aim are different words. Use the existing model to rehearse I’m from, then change the details rather than treating aim-from as an exact sound guide.
Repair one unclear word
- Some learners find unfamiliar final consonants difficult. If a listener hears nay for name, practise the /m/, then say the whole phrase again.
- Meet you may contain linked or changed sounds. A clear phrase does not require a separate loud /t/ release before you.
- More practice: word endings. Ask which word was unclear rather than trying to change your entire accent.
Your introduction, with a reply
- Put your details together: Hi, I'm … I'm from … Nice to meet you. Practice box 5 has Li Ming's recorded model; replace the details in your own take.
- Listen back: are the chosen name and place understandable? If a partner asks Could you spell that?, answer with the letters. Alone, pause to take the partner's role; this is rehearsal, not a live interaction test.
- Try again after choosing one repair. The second take may be clearer in one place and less clear in another; compare both honestly.
Your full introduction — swap in YOUR name and city. Record it twice.
Compare the name, place and greeting you actually said. Try a different introduction tomorrow; this checklist is self-review, not a pronunciation or proficiency score.
Recall and change the details
- Tomorrow, introduce an invented person and spell their name before rereading. Then ask and answer a follow-up with a partner if possible.
- Return to names and introductions listening or move to A2 routines, plans and requests. Speaker buttons elsewhere play audio; recording is available only in activities with recording controls.
