Read a small sign
- Outcome: recognise a few short signs. Start with numbers zero to ten.
- These are classroom examples. Read the word and the place it belongs to; colour alone is not the answer.
Open and closed
- OPEN — open 开放. CLOSED — closed 不开放.
- Worked repair: if Room 2 says CLOSED, do not report Room 2: OPEN. The place is the same, but the status changed.
Choose the sign that says a room is open.
OPEN marks the open room here. CLOSED gives the opposite status; EXIT labels a way out.
Choose the sign that says a room is closed.
CLOSED is the closed-room label. Do not confuse it with OPEN.
Push and pull
- Look at the picture in the matching task. Compare each arrow with the person.
- PUSH — push 推. PULL — pull 拉. In the picture, look at the arrow relative to the person.
PUSH / PULL
Match the door word to the movement in the picture.
Push goes away from the person; pull comes towards the person in this teaching picture.
Exit and quiet
- EXIT — a way out 出口. QUIET — quiet 安静.
- A way-out label and a request for quiet are different. Neither word gives a room number.
Choose the word for a way out.
EXIT labels a way out. OPEN gives a status, not the destination.
New signs
- Read each short English label beside the question. Keep each word with its own room or door.
- Choose before feedback. If two rooms have different signs, do not swap them.
Room 2: CLOSED. Room 3: OPEN.
Read. Which room is open?
Room 3 carries OPEN. Room 2 carries CLOSED; keep the label with its own room.
Room 2: CLOSED. Room 3: OPEN.
Read. Which room is closed?
CLOSED belongs to Room 2, not Room 3.
Door A: PUSH. Door B: PULL.
Read. Which word is on Door B?
Door B carries PULL. Door A carries PUSH; do not swap the labels.
QUIET
This sign asks for quiet.
QUIET asks for a quiet space. It does not give a room number or say the room is closed.
Classroom: OPEN. Way out: EXIT.
Read. Which label marks the way out?
EXIT is the way-out label. The other familiar words do different jobs.
OPEN and CLOSED give the same room status.
They give different statuses. Read the word on the particular room, not just a familiar shape.
Make a useful sign
- Read the new desk label. Then write a sign for open Room 4 before showing the model.
- Check number + status. You may use digits or the number word you learned.
Desk 5: CLOSED
New desk label. What status is shown?
CLOSED is the status of this desk. EXIT would mark a way out; it is not written here.
Write a short English sign for Room 4. The room is open. Include the room number and status before showing the model.
Compare with the meaning and checklist. A model is one possibility; this self-review does not check every answer or award proficiency.
Use the signs
- With a partner, make two paper door labels and point to one. Ask them which word it shows.
- Swap the labels and read again. This is supported reading practice, not evidence about listening or every real-world sign.
Review later
- Tomorrow, choose the pull word before looking back. Read a new paper label with a different room number.
- Next: ask for help.
Course note: these are original starter examples. Pre-A1 is an intended teaching target, not a validated placement result or complete level course. Council of Europe descriptor information checked 21 October 2026; it does not approve this local course. Independent language, answer, recording/accessibility and learner reviews remain pending.
Later, choose the word for moving a door towards you.
PULL comes towards you in the taught contrast; PUSH goes away.
