Prepositions of place

Describe where something is

- Outcome: describe a location and distinguish it from a nearby but different location. Start with there is and there are.
- Starting check: if a key is inside a bag, is it on the bag's outside? No: in the bag describes the inside location.
The cat is under the table. It is supervising dinner from a safe distance.
in / on / under
- In can put something inside a container: The keys are in the bag.
- On can describe a supported surface location: The book is on the table. A picture displayed on the wall is another surface example; on is not limited to a horizontal top.
- Under places something lower, often in the area directly beneath: The cat is under the chair. Below can also describe a lower position; not every lower object is directly under another one.
The book is on the table. Which word shows the surface?
A surface (the table top) → on.
Complete: The keys are ___ the bag. (inside)
Inside something → in: “in the bag”.
Translate into English:
The cat is under the chair is one natural translation. Beneath and a natural there is construction can fit too; preserve the cat’s position rather than copying one model order.
Inside a container is the in model. A coin is inside a closed box. Choose the matching location.
In the box preserves the stated inside location. On and under describe different relations to the box. Next try: describe a coin resting on its lid.
Beside, between, behind
- Next to or beside: at the side of something. The bag is next to the door.
- Between can place someone in the space separating two people: Jo sits between Tom and Sam. It need not mean exactly halfway. In other uses, between can connect more than two distinct things or people: an agreement between three schools.
- Behind means at the back of; in front of means at the front of. Decide which front or viewpoint the description uses.
in, on or under?
Use in, on and under for the inside, surface and beneath examples described here; these are not every possible use.
Three people sit in one row: Tom on her left and Sam on her right. Describe her position in that row: She sits ___ Tom and Sam.
Between fits the stated same-row position with Tom and Sam on opposite sides. Behind would describe a different relation, such as a seat in a row at their back. Between does not say that the gaps are equal. Repair: use the stated arrangement, not the names alone.
Beside means at the side of. A stool stands beside a cupboard. Which phrase keeps that relation?
Next to the cupboard keeps the beside relation. Inside and behind move the stool to different positions. Next try: name another object beside a landmark in your room.
Ask and answer a location question
- Where is my phone? Where are the keys? ask for locations with is/are. An answer can name a relation: It's on the desk. Short answers such as Here can also fit a real conversation.
- Other verbs use other frames: Where do you live? Do not put is into every question starting with where.
- Give enough information to distinguish the place: behind the chair beside the door is more useful than over there if your reader cannot see you point.
Use Where are for plural keys. Choose the full location question.
Where are the keys? uses are with plural keys. Is is singular here, and do alone does not supply the required location construction. Next try: ask about one key instead.
Meaning changes the choice
- For a picture hung on a wall's surface, say on the wall. A pipe built into a wall can be in the wall; in is not wrong for every object associated with a wall.
- Write next to the bank, with to. For two named landmarks, write between Tom and Sam, with and.
- In the matching activity, below → under is the beginner model for an object beneath another. It does not make the two words interchangeable in every description.
Match the beginner spatial models used here: inside a bag, on top of a table, below a chair, or at the side of a door.
For these models use in, on, under and next to. Under fits the below-chair position; below has other uses too. On can also describe a wall surface, not just a horizontal top. Next try: explain why on the wall is natural.
Is this correct? “The picture is on the wall.”
Yes. On the wall is a standard expression for a picture displayed there. A different object built inside a wall can be in the wall. The phrase alone does not prove how the picture is attached.
Use on for an object supported by the top of a desk. The cup rests on the desk’s top. Which sentence fits?
On describes the stated top-surface position. In would put the cup inside, and under would put it beneath. Next try: locate a cup inside a drawer.
- Use the intended relation: in a container, on a surface, under a chair, next to a door, between two seats, behind a desk.
- Locate the object from the reader's viewpoint. A correct preposition with the wrong landmark still gives the wrong location.
Look at your room. Write one sentence saying where something is, using a preposition of place.
Example: “My bag is on the chair.”
For this beneath-chair model, choose under. The shoes are on the floor directly beneath a chair. Where are they?
Under the chair locates the shoes beneath it. In front and on describe other positions. Next try: explain which object is higher in this description.
Three worked contrasts
- Inside or outside: a key is loose inside a zipped bag: The key is in the bag. A key resting on the outside of the bag is on the bag. Replacing in with on changes the location.
- Between or behind: three chairs form one row: Tom, Jo, Sam. Jo sits between Tom and Sam gives that relation. Moving Jo to a second row behind both changes the description to behind Tom and Sam. The names alone do not choose the preposition.
- Surface or built inside: a poster hangs on the wall; a cable is hidden inside it. Write the poster on the wall and the cable in the wall. Both phrases can be correct because their objects occupy different places.
A cable is hidden inside the wall; a poster hangs on its outside surface. Which description preserves both facts?
In describes the hidden inside cable; on describes the poster displayed on the surface. Vertical surfaces can take on too. Repair: distinguish inside from surface instead of choosing one word for every object near a wall.
Jo sits in a row between Tom and Sam, much closer to Tom. Is the description necessarily wrong?
Between gives the separating-space relation; it does not require equal gaps. The position can be closer to Tom without moving behind both people. Next try: add the words exactly halfway and explain what extra fact they supply.
A visitor faces a desk. A box is behind the desk, and a bag is beside the door. Which message sends them to the box?
Behind the desk identifies the box in the stated viewpoint. Next to the door identifies the bag, and in front gives the wrong side. Repair: keep the object and landmark together when giving a direction. Next try: direct the visitor to the bag.
Write a useful location message
- Try the fresh decisions, then write the short English location message before opening its comparison. Check the object, the landmark and the spatial relation; repair one actual mismatch.
- Tomorrow, describe one object in your room in two ways, using two different landmarks. Check that both descriptions can be true at once.
- Continue with time prepositions and connectors when ready for A2 work. Written descriptions do not establish listening or speaking proficiency.
Usage references: Cambridge, between and at, on and in for place. Original examples; independent language/key and learner review pending.
Facts: your key is inside a blue bag. The bag is on a chair. A red box is behind that chair, not inside the bag. Write a short English message helping Jo find the key. Mention the key and bag locations; do not confuse them with the red box. Compare and revise.
Compare your English with the stated facts and checklist. Repair a real mismatch, or explain why none is present. Several answers can fit. This is written self-review, not an automatic correctness or proficiency result.
Follow a route to the right object
- Read the object, its container and its landmarks in each new situation. Track which noun each place phrase describes; a correct preposition can still send someone to the wrong object.
- Try about half the practice today and half in another session. About 45–60 minutes across study, decisions and writing is a planning suggestion, not a test time or a measured level.
A pencil is inside a closed drawer. Which message helps someone find it?
In preserves the pencil’s inside location. On and under send the search to other places. Next try: name the extra landmark needed if there are several drawers.
A hat rests on the outside top of a closed suitcase. Which description fits?
On describes the stated top-surface position. In would hide the hat inside; behind would move it to the back. Next try: describe the hat after packing it.
A ball is on the floor directly beneath a table. Which description preserves that relation?
Under the table gives the stated beneath position. On and inside change the relation. Next try: explain why under does not mean the ball touches the table.
A lamp stands beside a sofa, at its left side. Which phrase gives the same relation?
Next to the sofa keeps the stated beside relation. Behind and under put it elsewhere. Next try: give a description using beside instead.
Three desks form one row, in order: desk A, desk B, desk C. Where is desk B relative to A and C?
B is between A and C in the given row. Behind and in front describe a different relation, not this left-to-right order. Next try: move B to a row at their back and change the description.
From the classroom’s front-facing direction, a coat is at the back of a chair. Choose the stated relation.
Behind identifies the stated back position. In front reverses it; inside changes the relation. Next try: say what viewpoint you would clarify if the chair’s front were unclear.
A small picture hangs on the surface of a door. Which description fits that surface location?
On the door describes the displayed surface location. In would suggest an inside position and under a beneath position. Next try: describe a cable built into the door.
A cable runs inside a wall, hidden by its outer surface. Which location fits?
In the wall preserves the hidden inside location. On and in front do not describe that inside position. Next try: contrast it with a clock displayed on the wall.
A full sentence says, “The shoes are next to the bed.” Must the shoes be inside the bed?
Next to places the shoes beside the bed, not inside it. The landmark does not change the meaning to inside. Next try: rewrite using beside.
Your friend asks where one phone is. Choose a full standard question.
Where is the phone? uses singular is. Are gives plural agreement here; do alone does not complete this location construction. Next try: ask about two phones.
A map says the café is between the bank and the school, but closer to the bank. What follows?
Between does not require exactly equal gaps. The café can be closer to the bank without being inside the school. Next try: add the extra information expressed by halfway.
A note says, “The box is in the cupboard.” Which claim is supported?
In the cupboard identifies the inside position. It does not put the box under the whole cupboard or on its outside top. Next try: describe where it would be if moved to that top.
A visitor needs the green bag. The green bag is behind a desk; the black bag is beside a window. Which direction identifies the green bag?
Behind the desk identifies the green bag. Beside the window sends the visitor to the black bag, and the drawer is not given. Next try: direct someone to the black bag.
A teacher says, “The books are here,” while pointing to them. Is that reply impossible because it has no preposition?
Here can give a location when the situation makes it useful. A full preposition phrase is another possible answer, not a requirement for every reply. Next try: replace the pointing with a written landmark.
Complete the standard phrase in this sentence: The shop is next ___ the bank.
Next to is the complete phrase here. Next and or next with does not express this beside relation. Next try: rewrite the message using beside the bank.
Complete this two-landmark description: The seat is between the door ___ the window.
Between the door and the window pairs the two named landmarks with and. With and to do not complete that frame. Next try: describe another object using the same two landmarks.
A sign says, “An agreement between three schools.” Must between be wrong solely because three schools are named?
Between can connect more than two distinct parties in this agreement use. The beginner two-landmark spatial model is not a limit on every meaning of between. Next try: identify the parties without inventing the agreement’s details.
A note says, “The red cup is under the chair near the door.” Which landmark directly locates the red cup?
The chair near the door is the stated landmark for the cup. The note gives neither a far wall nor a table. Next try: explain which words help choose the right chair.
Retrieve and revise later
- Tomorrow, try the two review decisions and a new ticket message before rereading. Trace the search route from landmark to container to object.
- Compare with the concealed writing model after your attempt. Repair one fact or form, or explain why no repair is needed. These written checks support study; they do not certify independent mastery or speaking/listening proficiency.
Review later: a scarf is inside a bag that rests on a bench. Which message preserves both locations?
In locates the scarf inside its container; on locates that container on the bench. The other options change the facts. Next try: describe how the message changes if the bag moves beneath the bench.
Review later: four chairs form a row; one chair is between two others but not halfway. Which judgment fits?
Between describes the relation without requiring an exact midpoint. The row does not establish a front-of-everyone relation. Next try: name the extra word needed to insist on equal gaps.
Return later without rereading. Facts: a ticket is inside a green folder. The folder is on a shelf beside the door. A red folder is inside a cupboard. Write a short English message helping a friend find the ticket. Preserve its container and the correct container’s location. Compare and revise.
Compare your English with the facts and checklist. Revise a real mismatch, or explain why none is present. Several answers can fit. This written self-review does not automatically mark your answer correct or establish proficiency.
