格外 + 形容词 / 动词 — "especially, exceptionally"

especially格外gé wài は、regular通常tōng chángのpattern範fànJapanese variant of 围囲tōngをto exceed超chāoえたnature性質xìng zhìをto emphasize (a statement)強調qiáng diàoする。「special特tèに、extremely極jíめて、different殊shūに」。 unusual特别tè bié よりyoung少shǎoしliterature文学wén xué(modifier / structural particle)的deで、 standard標準biāo zhǔnから際立jì lìっている ことをwatch (timepiece)表biǎoす。

Structure: 格外 + Adjective / Verb

after the rain雨后yǔ hòu的dethe air空气kōng qìexceptionally格外gé wàifresh新鲜xīn xiān。

The air after rain is exceptionally fresh.

seeing见到jiàn dàoher old friend老朋友lǎo péng youshe，她tāespecially格外gé wàihappy高兴gāo xìng。

Seeing her old friend, she was especially happy.
