Say it aloud: routines, times and shopping

Longer turns, real exchanges
-
This lesson practises short exchanges: ask, answer and add one more line. Its HSK 2 course placement is a teaching sequence, not evidence that a learner has attained a level.
-
Same method: hear → say → record → compare. Nothing is scored; the recording stays on this page.
-
Before you start: Recall meeting times and the first spoken introduction. Keep action time, price and a changed plan clear; the written checks are planning support.
For a routine beginning at seven, which sentence uses the taught time-before-action frame?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
我七点起床 puts the time 七点 before 起床. 七点我起床 is another possible arrangement; the intended time-of-day frame is the focus here.
Your morning, in Chinese order
- In these routine statements, put the time before the verb: I / me我七点to get out of bed起床。I / me我八点variant of 吃吃breakfast早饭。
- English also allows “At seven, I get up.” For the Mandarin frame here, keep the time before the action; it can follow the subject or begin the sentence.
- Practice box 1: record the two-sentence routine.
Hear the model, then record yourself saying it.
For the routine frame, put the time before the action: 我七点起床. 七点我起床 is also possible; time need not be the first word.
The two二 / two两 trap
- For the quantity two in these everyday classifier phrases, practise two两 liǎng: 两个younger brother弟弟, 两块cake蛋糕. This is guidance for these phrases, not a rule for every numeral or measure expression.
- Use two二 èr in digit sequences and the numbers twelve十二 and twenty二十. Learn the choice in a whole expression; two两 and two二 have other conventional uses too.
- Practice box 2: record the sentence with two两.
Work through a decision: Plan a morning by pairing each time with its own action before speaking. In a shop exchange, keep the seller’s quoted price separate from your reply about it. If one time changes, revise that event rather than changing every time or carrying the old plan into the new turn.
Compare a near miss: Fluently reading the model’s seven-o’clock routine does not tell the listener your new routine. to thank谢谢 can acknowledge a seller without accepting a price; make the intended question, reaction or decision clear.
Count with 两. Record the sentence.
两个弟弟 uses 两 for the quantity two before 个. 二 is used in digit sequences and numbers such as 十二; learn other measure expressions in context instead of applying one universal substitution.
Your note changes breakfast from 七点四十 to 八点, but keeps getting up at 七点. Which pair preserves the unchanged event?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Only breakfast moves to eight. The second pair keeps getting up at seven and updates breakfast. The other choices swap the events or retain the old breakfast time.
Asking the time
- now现在what time?几点? — What time is it now? now现在三点half半。 — It's half past three.
- half半 does the "half past". 三点half半 — the half半 comes after the hour.
- Practice box 3: record the question and the answer.
Ask and answer. Record both sides.
半 = half past. 三点半 — "three o''clock half".
At the shop
- Ask: this这个how many / how much多少coin钱? Answer: 二十块。
- Too expensive? 太贵(completed / change)了!cheap便宜erhua variant of 点点儿(suggestion)吧。 — too expensive! a bit cheaper, please.
- cheap便宜erhua variant of 一点一点儿(suggestion)吧 and cheap便宜erhua variant of 点点儿(suggestion)吧 can both make this request. erhua variant of 点点儿 is the (Chinese phonetics) to…儿化 form here; do not treat an omitted one / a一 as a requirement of every spoken request.
- erhua variant of 点点儿 reduces the requested change and (suggestion)吧 can soften the suggestion. Tone, relationship and situation also affect how polite it sounds.
- Practice box 4: record the bargaining line.
Bargain politely. Record both lines.
便宜点儿吧 and 便宜一点儿吧 can both make this request. The wording can soften it, while delivery and context still affect politeness.
Third-tone chains
- hello你好 taught you 3+3 → 2+3. In the two-syllable phrase degree / adjective linker很good好, the first syllable commonly sounds like hén before hǎo. Longer sequences need attention to grouping.
- I / me我also也can / may可以 has four underlying third tones, not four neutral tones. Grouping and speech rhythm affect their surface tones; practise the whole phrase rather than changing every syllable to the same rising tone.
- A third tone often stays low in connected speech. Use the tone-change guide to distinguish a low third tone from a light neutral syllable.
Your turn: morning and market
- Say your morning in two sentences (time first!), then buy one thing: ask the price, react, bargain.
- Practice box 5 is a full shop exchange; practice box 6 gives a model morning — make both yours when you record.
- Record twice: once reading, once from memory.
The full shop exchange — both voices. Record it.
这个多少钱?— "this one how-much money?" 二十块 answers with the amount plus 块.
YOUR morning — swap in your own times. Record it twice.
This is a local routine-description task. Compare word order, clarity and your intended details; completing it does not certify HSK speaking proficiency.
New routine card: a fictional person gets up at six, eats breakfast at seven and goes to class at eight. Describe that morning in two or three Mandarin sentences. Then voice a short time question and answer using one of those times. Make the time/action pairing clear. Speak in Mandarin. Use brief notes rather than reading a prepared answer.
Written comparison supports your own replay and revision. No automatic correctness, pronunciation score or exam-level judgement is provided.
Keep the voice working
- Tomorrow, before you reopen this page: say what time it is, then describe your morning — aloud.
- Next speaking lesson: stories, comparisons and reasons. Separate Chinese practice has its own task instructions; a written answer is not speaking evidence.
- For the routine frame, review I / me我七点to get out of bed起床 or 七点I / me我to get out of bed起床。Do not substitute I / me我to get out of bed起床七点 for this intended time-of-day meaning.
Later recall: Tomorrow, give a different routine with one changed time, then ask and answer about the changed event. A few days later, switch to a price exchange. Revisit time/action pairing after a factual mix-up rather than just repeating the old recording.
Changed-context shop card: ask the price of an item. The seller answers 十块. React that it is too expensive and ask for a lower price. Then make a new version in which the quoted price is 二十块; keep the seller’s price distinct from your own request. Voice both roles. Speak in Mandarin. Use brief notes rather than reading a prepared answer.
Written comparison supports your own replay and revision. No automatic correctness, pronunciation score or exam-level judgement is provided.
