Present continuous — happening now
הוצגהמיקום המנוהל נשמר בדפדפן הזה. המשך אינו משלים את השיעור או עונה על שאלותיו.
Happening right now

-
Outcome: describe current progress, a temporary situation or an arranged future action using a complete verb frame. Start with actions happening at this moment.
-
Look! It's raining. The kids are playing outside.
-
The diagram illustrates an action in progress now. The continuous can also describe a temporary pattern around now: I’m cooking every day this week because our cook is away.
-
Start: review present simple and am/is/are. Quick check: does “I’m cooking now” prove dinner is ready? No: it describes progress, not completion. Allow about 45–60 minutes over several sessions, including later review; this is a study suggestion.
I am cleaning my room now. The dust is making other plans.
The form: be + -ing
- am / is / are + verb-ing.
- I am reading. She is cooking. They are playing.
- In these full statements, keep a form of be: He is working / He’s working. For a negative, put not after be: She isn’t cooking.
- For a yes/no question, put be before the subject: Are they playing? A matching short answer is Yes, they are / No, they aren’t. Do not add do/does to this frame.
Which sentence is in the present continuous?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Present continuous = be + verb-ing: “She is cooking”.
Use are + an -ing verb for a plural subject. Choose the complete sentence.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
They are carrying uses plural are and carrying. Is does not agree with they, and are carry leaves the main verb in its base form. Next try: use one person as the subject.
Spelling the -ing
- Most verbs: just add -ing → read → reading.
- Many verbs ending in a silent -e drop it: make → making, write → writing. Compare see → seeing and be → being, which keep the vowel letters.
- In one-syllable examples with one vowel letter followed by one final consonant, double that consonant: run → running, sit → sitting. Do not double final w, x, y: play → playing, fix → fixing. For lie, change -ie to y: lying.
Make the -ing form
Sort these particular -ing spellings: adding -ing, dropping silent -e, or doubling a final consonant in run and sit.
Write the -ing form of “run”.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Run has one syllable and a final consonant after one vowel letter: run → running. Being short alone is not the rule: play → playing and fix → fixing.
Choose the correctly spelled -ing form of make. Drop its silent final e.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Make becomes making by dropping the silent e before -ing. Makeing keeps that e, and makking adds an extra consonant. Next try: form writing from write.
Choose the meaning, not just a signal word
- Present simple = a habit: I read every night.
- Present continuous can show an action in progress: I am reading now. It can also show a temporary situation or arrangement: I’m staying with my aunt this week. I’m meeting her tomorrow.
- Time words help, but they do not choose the verb form alone: I know the answer now uses the present simple. Ask what the speaker means.
“I am reading now.” — Is the present continuous correct here?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The sentence can describe reading in progress now. Now does not automatically require the continuous: I know the answer now is a different, grammatical pattern.
Translate into English: 他们正在踢足球。
Difficulty 3/5 · 200 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
They are playing football or They’re playing soccer preserves the ongoing plural activity. A natural faithful translation can use another word order. They play every Sunday changes it into a habit; they finished playing changes it into a completed game.
The visit is temporary: Jo is staying with an aunt this week. Which interpretation fits?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
This week’s stay is presented as temporary. The sentence does not establish a permanent home or a completed stay. Next try: contrast it with Jo lives with an aunt.
Common mistakes
- ❌ They are play football. → ✓ They are playing football. — be and -ing go together.
- She cooks every day describes a routine. She is cooking every day this week can describe temporary repeated activity; every day does not make the continuous wrong.
- ❌ He is writeing. → ✓ He is writing. — drop the e, then add -ing.
- For ordinary knowledge or possession, use I know the answer now / Kai has a bike. A different meaning can use the continuous: Kai is having lunch describes an activity. Choose the meaning, not a ban on a whole verb.
Match the verb to its -ing form.
Difficulty 2/5 · 140 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
run / sit double the last letter; write drops the e; study just adds -ing.
Is this correct? “I am knowing the answer.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
For the ordinary knowledge meaning here, use I know the answer. Verbs have different senses, so this is not a ban on every continuous form of every state-related verb.
Use not after be to make a complete negative about the current activity.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
She isn’t reading uses is not plus reading. The other options mix do with be or leave be out. Next try: make the positive version.
- am / is / are + verb-ing forms this continuous frame; put not after be for negatives and move be before the subject for yes/no questions. Contractions such as she’s working keep the same frame.
- Choose the meaning: current progress, a temporary situation or an arrangement. Now does not force every verb into the continuous, and every day can describe a temporary pattern.
Look around you. Write one sentence about what someone is doing right now, using the present continuous.
Difficulty 3/5 · 200 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Example: “My friend is listening to music.” (is + listening)
To ask about the current activity, put is before the subject. Choose the complete question.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Is Lea working? uses is before Lea and keeps working. Does is mixes question frames; is work leaves the main verb in its base form. Next try: give a short negative answer.
Three worked contrasts
- Routine and progress: Lea cooks most evenings describes her usual pattern. Lea is cooking now reports an activity in progress. Near miss: “Lea is cook now” leaves the main verb in its base form; repair it to is cooking. Neither sentence tells us dinner is ready.
- Temporary pattern and arrangement: I’m helping at the school every day this week presents repeated activity as temporary. I’m meeting my tutor tomorrow at three can report an agreed arrangement. Near miss: “Every day makes the first sentence wrong” treats a time phrase as a rule. Keep the temporary meaning; tomorrow’s arranged meeting has not already happened.
- Different meanings of have: Kai has a bike describes possession. Kai is having lunch describes an activity in progress. Near miss: “Kai is having a bike” does not give the ordinary possession meaning intended here. Repair that meaning to has; do not ban having from the meal sentence.
Independent decisions
- Try the fresh questions before returning to the explanations. Read the whole situation, choose the complete frame and keep its time meaning. A spelling choice alone cannot tell you whether an activity is happening now.
- After checking, name the cause of an error: be agreement, an incomplete -ing frame, spelling or a meaning added without evidence. Repair it, then make a new example of your own. These are written grammar decisions, not a test of spoken fluency.
Choose the complete present-continuous statement with I.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
I takes am in this frame. Is gives the wrong agreement and bare waiting leaves the statement incomplete. Next try: use we instead of I.
Choose the complete statement about two people’s current activity.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The plural pair takes are with painting. Is does not agree here, and are paint does not complete the continuous frame. Next try: describe only Rae.
Choose the complete negative in the present continuous.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Isn’t sleeping uses is not plus -ing. The other options do not form the requested continuous negative. Next try: ask whether the dog is sleeping.
Choose the complete question about the children’s activity.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Are the children drawing? pairs plural children with are before the subject. The alternatives mix auxiliaries or use singular is. Next try: answer it with a matching short reply.
A friend asks, “Is Lea reading?” You know she is. Choose the matching short answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Yes, she is matches the is-question. Does answers another frame and she reading leaves out be. Next try: give the short negative answer.
Choose the standard -ing spelling of write.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Write drops its silent final e: writing. The other options retain that e or add an extra t. Next try: form making.
Choose the standard -ing spelling of sit.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Sit doubles its final t before -ing: sitting. Siting belongs to site, not sit; sitteing adds an inappropriate e. Next try: form running.
Choose the standard -ing spelling of lie, meaning rest horizontally.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Lie changes -ie to y before -ing: lying. The other spellings do not form this verb’s -ing form. Next try: use lying in a full sentence.
Choose the standard -ing spelling of see.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
See keeps its vowel letters and adds -ing: seeing. The rule for a silent final e in make does not remove an e from see. Next try: form being.
Choose the standard -ing spelling of study.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Study keeps y and adds -ing: studying. The other forms delete or replace the y incorrectly. Next try: form playing.
Choose the standard -ing spelling of fix.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Fix adds -ing without doubling x: fixing. The alternatives add an extra x or e. Next try: form mixing.
You can see Sam in the middle of washing a cup. Choose the current-progress description.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Is washing describes the observed progress. The routine adds a daily pattern and has finished claims completion, neither of which is supplied. Next try: write a negative about another activity without claiming it is observed.
A note reports only Lea’s usual routine: she cooks most evenings. Which version preserves that information?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Cooks most evenings preserves the usual pattern. The other choices assert a current action or completion unsupported by the note. Next try: ask for a current update separately.
A friend writes, “I’m working at the café this week while its owner is away.” Which reading fits?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The week and owner’s absence frame temporary work. They do not establish a permanent job or rule out today’s work. Next try: describe a usual long-term job separately.
You and Jo have agreed to meet tomorrow at the library. Which present-continuous sentence reports that arrangement?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
I’m meeting gives the requested continuous frame with a future time. Met and meet do not fit after am here. Next try: ask what time the meeting is arranged for.
Choose the standard sentence for the ordinary meaning of knowing an answer now.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Know ordinarily uses the simple form for this meaning, even with now. Am know also breaks the verb frame. Next try: contrast it with an activity such as writing the answer.
Choose the standard sentence saying that Kai owns a bike.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Has gives ordinary possession with singular Kai. Is having does not express the intended possession in this ordinary model; have does not agree here. Next try: contrast having a meal.
Kai is in the middle of a meal. Choose the current activity description.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Is having lunch describes the activity in progress. Is have breaks the frame; has finished asserts completion contrary to the supplied situation. Next try: ask whether Kai is having lunch.
A note says, “I’m helping at the school every day this week.” What is a defensible reading?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Every day this week can frame temporary repeated activity. It does not prohibit the continuous or establish a permanent job. Next try: contrast a usual routine without this temporary limit.
“Jo is meeting the tutor tomorrow” reports an agreed arrangement. Which conclusion stays within it?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Tomorrow places the arranged meeting in the future. The other options turn it into a completed or current event. Next try: ask for the arranged place without inventing it.
Transfer: a short update
- Use the given facts in the English writing task. Separate this week’s temporary situation, the activity happening now and tomorrow’s arrangement. Do not turn any of them into a permanent routine or completed event.
- Attempt the message before opening its model. Compare the facts and full verb frames, then revise one real mismatch. A different natural word order or contraction can preserve the meaning.
A volunteer’s note says, “This week I’m helping at the school; tomorrow I’m meeting its new teacher.” No current activity is reported. Which summary preserves that information?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The second summary preserves the temporary help and future arrangement. The other choices invent an unqualified routine, completed meeting or current class. Next try: ask what the volunteer is doing right now.
Update notes: person—Lea; temporary activity this week—help at a school; action right now—carry a box; agreed arrangement for tomorrow—meet her tutor. Turn these notes into three English sentences using the present continuous. Keep the three time meanings. Compare and revise.
Compare your English with the given facts and full verb frames. Repair one real mismatch, or explain why none is present. Several answers can fit; self-review does not automatically mark correctness or establish proficiency.
Return later
- Tomorrow, recall the form and meanings before rereading. Try the later-review questions and write the new update. Asking about an unknown activity does not give its answer.
- Continue with past simple for earlier events or future plans for future choices. Written decisions and self-review support study; they do not certify independent mastery or listening/speaking ability.
Usage checked 20 October 2026: British Council, present continuous and stative verbs. Examples and tasks are original; independent language/key and learner review pending.
Review later: choose the complete negative in the present continuous.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Aren’t waiting uses are not plus -ing. The other options mix or omit parts of that negative frame. Next try: ask whether we are waiting.
Review later: “Rae usually cycles here, but this week she’s taking the bus.” Which interpretation fits?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The message contrasts a usual routine with this week’s temporary pattern. It does not locate Rae on a bus at this instant or establish a permanent end to cycling. Next try: ask for today’s current activity.
Return later without rereading. Update notes: person—Jo (she); temporary work this week—at a library; action right now—put books on a shelf; helping a visitor right now—unknown. Write two English present-continuous fact sentences, then ask a present-continuous question about helping a visitor. Leave its answer open. Compare and revise.
Compare your English with the given facts and full verb frames. Repair one real mismatch, or explain why none is present. Several answers can fit; self-review does not automatically mark correctness or establish proficiency.
