TOEFL iBT Listening from January 2026 · TOEFL iBT Écoute de janvier 2026
Keep the destination, not every greeting
- Original written announcement: “Thursday’s workshop moves from Lab A to Lab C. It still starts at 14:00. Bring your student ID.” Notes such as “Thu / C / 14:00 unchanged / ID” retain the destination, time and action.
- “The workshop moved” loses the new room; a guessed reason adds unsupported information. Choose notes from what the task needs. Your notebook does not need to audition as a transcript.
In the written workshop announcement, which information remains unchanged?
The announcement changes Lab A to Lab C but explicitly keeps 14:00.
A response must fit the speaker’s intention
- Listen and Choose a Response · Écouter et choisir une réponse asks for a fitting next turn. “Could you help me find Lab C?” is a request for help; “It is upstairs; I can show you” responds to it, while “Labs are interesting” merely shares a topic.
- Listen to a Conversation can ask about main ideas, details or implied meaning. Track who needs what, proposed solutions and accepted decisions. A word appearing in both turns is neither proof nor disproof of a correct response.
Match the note to the longer task
- Listen to an Announcement can require purpose, important information or a likely next action. In the workshop case, going to Lab C and bringing ID follow directly; cancelling does not. An unchanged detail may still answer a question.
- Listen to an Academic Talk · Écouter une conférence académique can require main ideas, supporting details, organisation or inferences. Keep the claim and the evidence or qualification that matters; there is no universal rule to write exactly two supporting points.
Listen and Choose a Response is closest to which skill?
You hear a short turn and choose what a person would say next. It is conversational, not a lecture.
Match each Listening task to what you hear.
These four tasks have different demands; conversations are not restricted to a fixed length or one question type.
Published bases describe the section
- ETS lists approximately 29 minutes and 47 items for Listening, excluding directions. Reading and Listening use two-stage adaptivity; earlier performance helps determine a later module. The bases are not an equal-time-per-question instruction.
- Notes are allowed. Try brief notes on real audio and check whether writing makes you miss the next point. A short response item may need attention more than a written outline; a talk may benefit from one.
About how many minutes is TOEFL Listening? Use the figure ETS publishes.
ETS says about 29 minutes and 47 items.
Complete: Listening has about ___ items.
About 47 items across the four listening tasks.
You may take notes during TOEFL Listening.
Notes are allowed. Decide their amount from the task and test whether writing distracts from incoming audio.
A transcript check leaves a missing kind of evidence
- These written examples test interpretation of text. Correctly finding Lab C on this page does not show that you recognised “Lab C” in speech, handled an accent or retained information while the audio continued.
- For a listening rehearsal, use an official sample with its actual recording and playback instructions, keep the transcript hidden for the first attempt, then use it during review. A PDF without matching audio is a reading aid, not a complete listening task.
Finding Lab C correctly in this text proves you recognised it in speech.
Text interpretation supplies no evidence of recognising the spoken room name.
Attempt, review and transfer
- Record the first result, locate the missed spoken cue during review, then try a fresh recording without the transcript. Keep reviewed accuracy separate from independent accuracy; neither has an official score conversion here.
- Recap: identify intention, retain relevant details and check with actual audio. Format checked on 2 October 2026: ETS Listening tasks, ETS content and timing, ETS preparation.
Match the three distinctions from the worked case.
Use short notes for information that matters: “Thu / 14:00 / lab C / bring ID”. For a short conversational turn, deciding whether it requests help may matter more than taking any note.
An announcement moves a workshop to Lab C. Which note is most useful?
A reply-choice prompt needs attention to the speaker’s intention. An announcement about a room change needs the destination and action. Writing every word can hide both. Use short notes for information that matters: “Thu / 14:00 / lab C / bring ID”. For a short conversational turn, deciding whether it requests help may matter more than taking any note.
Complete the worked-case label: Reply choice → ____. Use the phrase in the diagram.
Choose a note method that fits the task, then test it on actual audio without the transcript.
