Matching features — preserve attribution and conditions
A nearby name does not own every nearby idea
- Outcome: match a fact, view or condition to the correct person, object or place while preserving who it belongs to, when it applies and how far it extends. Start with Reading orientation and the matching overview. Names help you find a place to read; they do not finish the reasoning.
- Matching features connects information to a supplied list of options, such as people or designs. Matching information asks for a paragraph location, and headings summarise main contributions. Here, choose the option supported by the complete passage. These short original exercises are focused practice, not a full test interface or an IELTS band estimate.
Worked attribution: reporter and proposer can be different
- Original passage: “Mara records Jun’s proposal for a weekend repair desk. Mara wants a volunteer schedule before endorsing it. Eliot prefers extending weekday opening instead.” Request: who proposed the weekend desk? Answer: Jun. Mara records Jun’s idea and asks for evidence about staffing; she has not endorsed the proposal.
- Eliot offers a different arrangement. Choosing Mara because her name comes first confuses the reporting frame with the idea’s source. Keep a small mental map: person → action or view → condition. A name is a search anchor, not a magnet that attracts every opinion in the sentence.
Worked change: preserve earlier and current positions
- Original passage: “Leen first recommended one camera for the workshop demonstration. After a trial left the small hand movements hidden, Leen recommended a second close-up camera. Tov still preferred one camera; Arun asked for another trial before deciding.” Request: who revised a recommendation after seeing a limitation? Answer: Leen. The passage connects both positions to the same person.
- Tov keeps the earlier arrangement and Arun postpones judgement. Do not attach Leen’s current view to Tov because the first proposal matches his preference. Words such as first, after, now and still can separate views that share the same topic words.
Worked features: a shared part does not make the same design
- Original passage: “The Alder stand has adjustable height and a fixed tray. The Birch stand has adjustable height and a removable tray. The Cedar stand has fixed height and a removable tray.” Request: which stand combines height adjustment with a removable tray? Answer: Birch. Both requested features belong to Birch.
- Alder supplies only the first feature and Cedar only the second. Keep the conjunction: and requires both here. Other questions may concern an exception, a required attachment or a particular product version; read that condition with the feature rather than borrowing it from another option.
Guided practice: name the relationship before the option
- The next ten passages include a reading cue. Identify the demand: who originates, reports, agrees, rejects, revises or compares? For objects and places, identify the exact combination of feature, version and use condition. Then find the sentence that assigns it.
- Read beyond the first name. Resolve pronouns from a clear antecedent and the surrounding action; do not use a nearest-name rule. Agreement with a goal does not imply agreement with its timing or method. A request for more evidence may leave a proposal undecided rather than accepted or rejected.
Original passage: Nia reports that Omar proposed a separate shelf for fragile books. Nia welcomes easier access but asks for a cost estimate before endorsing the shelf. Jules prefers repairing the existing shelves first.
Who originated the separate-shelf proposal? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Separate the reporting person from the source of the proposal.
Omar originates the proposal. Nia reports it and reserves judgement pending costs; Jules proposes a different priority. The reporter is not automatically the proposer.
Original passage: Sara first recommended closing the gate at noon. After observing queues during a trial, Sara changed her recommendation to keeping it open until two. Theo still favours noon; Imani asks for another week of observations.
Who revised an earlier recommendation after observing a trial? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Track the same person before and after the new evidence.
Sara changes the proposed closing time after seeing queues. Theo retains the earlier time and Imani requests more evidence rather than making that revision.
Original passage: Ben supports lending the tools provided borrowers complete a safety introduction. Mira opposes tool lending because staff cannot supervise it. Cal supports lending without that introduction.
Who supports lending under a stated preparation condition? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Keep the condition attached to its supporter.
Ben attaches support to the safety introduction. Mira opposes the scheme; Cal supports it without the stated condition. Agreement with lending does not make their positions identical.
Original passage: The Field recorder resists rain only when its port cover is shut. The Studio recorder needs a separate rain case. The Pocket recorder is lighter than both but has no stated rain protection.
Which recorder has rain protection dependent on a built-in cover being closed? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Match both the feature and the condition, not rain-related vocabulary alone.
Field protection depends on its own cover. Studio needs a separate case; Pocket’s lighter weight says nothing about rain protection.
Original passage: North garden lends a wheelchair for use on its paths. East garden allows visitors to bring their own wheelchairs but has none to lend. West garden provides an online map showing its stepped entrances.
Which place supplies mobility equipment for visitors to borrow? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Distinguish providing something from permitting visitors to bring it.
North supplies a loan wheelchair. East permits personal equipment, while West provides information about steps; neither states an equipment loan.
Original passage: Luca quotes Aya’s claim that the new display attracts more visitors. Luca says visitor counts are not yet available to test that claim. Pavel adds that even a higher count would not by itself demonstrate better understanding.
Who says the evidence needed to test the visitor-number claim is currently unavailable? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Separate a claim, missing evidence and a limitation on possible evidence.
Luca identifies missing counts. Aya makes the claim, and Pavel limits what a hypothetical higher count would establish. They raise different evidence questions.
Original passage: Rina agrees with Joel that traffic near the school should be measured. However, Rina rejects Joel’s proposal to close the road before those measurements. Sam supports closing it immediately.
Who accepts collecting evidence but rejects the proposed action before it is collected? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Read what follows however before assigning the complete view.
Rina agrees on measurement while rejecting early closure. Joel proposes that closure and Sam supports immediate action. Partial agreement does not transfer the whole proposal.
Original passage: Leila tested the revised handle and found it easier to grip. After this trial, she recommended fitting it to the remaining drawers. Marcus recorded Leila’s results; Owen asked whether the original handle could be repaired instead.
Who recommended extending the tested change to the other drawers? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Resolve the pronoun from its stated subject and action.
Leila is the tester and the referent of she. Marcus records Leila’s results, while Owen raises a repair alternative. The nearest later name does not own the recommendation.
Original passage: The original Ridge pack had a fixed strap. The revised Ridge pack has an adjustable strap but retains the same outer fabric. The Vale pack has changed fabric but still uses a fixed strap.
Which version changes the strap while retaining the fabric? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Check the version as well as the product name.
Only Revised Ridge combines adjustable strap with unchanged fabric. Original Ridge has no strap change; Vale changes fabric and keeps a fixed strap.
Original passage: The River team recorded root growth outdoors. The Glasshouse team measured the same plants indoors. The Review team compared both records but did not collect new root measurements.
Which team compared existing data without gathering new measurements? Choose one option.
Reading cue: Distinguish collecting records from comparing records.
The Review team compares rather than collects. River and Glasshouse supply measurements in different locations. A team can discuss the same data without originating it.
Independent practice: twenty fresh contexts
- Each of the next twenty passages is different and has no reading cue. Choose before checking, then use the explanation to locate the ownership or condition you missed. Do not move a colleague’s proposal to the person reporting it, a former view to the present, or one model’s feature to another model.
- These short tasks do not measure the navigation and timing demands of a full Reading paper. Spread the unit across sessions if helpful; return using the saved-position choice deliberately. Remembering an option letter from another passage is not evidence for the new one.
Original passage: Arun summarises Mei’s suggestion that volunteers check each transcribed name against its scanned page. Arun asks whether enough volunteers are available. Tomas instead proposes publishing the transcript immediately and correcting it later.
Who proposes verification before publication? Choose one option.
Mei’s check is the proposal Arun reports. Arun questions staffing, and Tomas prefers later correction. Reporting Mei’s proposal does not give Arun ownership of it.
Original passage: Rosa expected the shaded plots to produce less fruit. The trial showed similar yields, so Rosa withdrew that prediction. Leon notes that watering costs were not compared; Kim requests a longer trial before changing the planting plan.
Who abandoned an earlier prediction after the trial? Choose one option.
Rosa withdraws her own yield prediction. Kim’s caution concerns the planting decision; Leon identifies a different unmeasured outcome. Neither is described as withdrawing that prediction.
Original passage: The Trail sensor can remain outdoors in rain if its cable seal is fitted. The Bench sensor works only indoors. The Roof sensor is permanently sealed and does not require users to fit a cable seal.
Which sensor requires the user to fit a seal for rainy outdoor use? Choose one option.
Trail has the stated fitting condition. Roof is already permanently sealed; Bench is indoor-only. General rain protection does not remove the need to match the installation requirement.
Original passage: Fern reserve opens its upper path only in dry weather. Reed reserve keeps its upper path open during rain but closes its riverside track. Heath reserve has no upper path; its level circuit stays open throughout the stated season.
Which place restricts an upper path according to wet or dry weather? Choose one option.
Fern restricts its upper path to dry conditions. Reed’s rain closure concerns a different track, and Heath has no upper path. Keep the route attached to the condition.
Original passage: Dalia suggests that each borrowed instrument should carry a maintenance record. Hugo agrees that records are useful but wants them stored only in the office. Priya proposes reducing the number of instruments instead.
Who wants the record to accompany the borrowed instrument? Choose one option.
Dalia attaches the record to each instrument. Hugo agrees on usefulness but assigns a different location. Priya proposes a different change, so broad concern about maintenance does not settle this match.
Original passage: Noor disputes the claim that more downloads prove readers finish the booklet. Ellis reports the download total without drawing that conclusion. Vera recommends adding a short reader survey to learn about completion.
Who explicitly rejects treating the download count as proof of completion? Choose one option.
Noor directly challenges that inference. Ellis reports a number and Vera proposes another measure; neither is described as making the explicit rejection. Similar concerns do not erase the stated roles.
Original passage: The Spring label includes large print and a raised border but no tactile lettering. The Stone label uses raised lettering and a raised border. The Clear label offers large print without a raised border.
Which label provides tactile letters as well as a raised border? Choose one option.
Stone has both features. Spring has a tactile border but not lettering; Clear has neither stated raised feature. One shared feature is insufficient when the request requires two.
Original passage: Ivo says the old photograph supports Hana’s proposed location for the bridge. Hana had suggested that location from a written description before seeing the photograph. Cora notes that the exact construction date remains unknown.
Who proposed the location before photographic support was available to them? Choose one option.
Hana’s proposal predates seeing the photograph. Ivo later presents support; Cora comments on a different uncertainty. Finding additional evidence is distinct from originating the earlier proposal.
Original passage: Maya inspected the leaking cabinet. She asked for its seal to be replaced before the documents went back inside. Daniel arranged transport for the documents; Peter photographed the cabinet for the repair record.
Who made replacement of the seal a condition for returning the documents? Choose one option.
She refers to Maya, the inspector. Transport and photography are supporting actions by others, not the stated condition. Do not move the recommendation to the nearest named helper.
Original passage: Oren once favoured removing every old sign. Oren now supports retaining legible signs and replacing only damaged ones. Sumi still wants complete replacement; Alex proposes keeping all signs, including the damaged ones.
Who now favours selective replacement after previously favouring complete removal? Choose one option.
Oren has both the earlier and revised positions. Sumi and Alex hold the two broader alternatives. The word now makes Oren’s current position different from the earlier one.
Original passage: The Amber model records sound but has no playback speaker. The Blue model records sound and plays it back through its built-in speaker. The Cedar model plays existing files through a speaker but cannot make recordings.
Which model can both create a recording and play it through a built-in speaker? Choose one option.
Blue combines recording and speaker playback. Amber lacks the speaker; Cedar lacks recording. Sharing one action does not meet a two-part requirement.
Original passage: Tariq accepts Lena’s estimate of the project’s cost but rejects her recommendation to begin before permission is granted. Lena wants work to start immediately. June argues that the estimate is too low and asks for a new budget.
Who accepts the cost figure while opposing the proposed timing? Choose one option.
Tariq separates agreement on cost from disagreement on timing. Lena proposes the early start; June disputes the figure itself. Partial agreement does not imply endorsement of the whole plan.
Original passage: The East room offers quiet desks that must be booked in advance. The South room has quiet desks available without booking. The West room accepts advance bookings for group discussions but is not designated a quiet area.
Which room combines quiet study with a requirement to book ahead? Choose one option.
East has both the quiet-study purpose and advance-booking condition. South is quiet without booking; West offers booking for a different kind of use. Match the combined requirements.
Original passage: In the meeting notes, Pia describes Sol’s proposed method of marking uncertain dates with a question mark. Pia says the method is clear but has not yet agreed to use it. Ravi recommends leaving all uncertain dates blank.
Who originated the question-mark method? Choose one option.
Sol owns the proposal that Pia describes. Pia’s positive comment is not adoption or authorship, while Ravi suggests blanks. The names around a reported idea have different roles.
Original passage: Keiko measured the noise outside the hall. Milan wrote a report comparing Keiko’s readings with older records. Fatima designed a follow-up survey but had not taken new readings when the report appeared.
Who compared new measurements with existing records? Choose one option.
Milan writes that comparison. Keiko collects the new readings and Fatima plans later work. Collecting or planning measurements is not the same role as comparing both sets.
Original passage: Pine shelter has transparent sides that block wind while preserving a view of the path. Moss shelter has opaque sides that block wind and the view. Ash shelter has an open side facing the path, so that view is clear but wind is not blocked there.
Which shelter protects against wind without hiding the path? Choose one option.
Pine combines protection with transparency. Moss blocks the view, and Ash leaves the relevant side open. A clear view alone does not establish the wind protection requested.
Original passage: Amir supports moving the workshop only if a step-free entrance is included. Beth proposes moving it to an upstairs room reached only by stairs. Chen favours keeping the present location rather than moving.
Who supports relocation subject to an access condition? Choose one option.
Amir’s support depends on step-free access. Beth proposes a location without it, and Chen opposes relocation. The common topic of moving does not make their conditions equivalent.
Original passage: The first Harbour map omitted small lanes. The current Harbour map adds those lanes but leaves bus routes unchanged. The Valley map changes bus routes while still omitting the small lanes.
Which map adds minor roads without changing bus routes? Choose one option.
Current Harbour makes that specific addition. First Harbour lacks it; Valley changes the other feature and still omits lanes. Keep edition and feature together.
Original passage: Elena first thought the marks were scratches made during transport. After examining repeated spacing, Elena suggested deliberate decoration instead. Bruno still favours transport damage, while Jo says the evidence is insufficient to choose between the two explanations.
Who replaced one explanation with another after examining a pattern? Choose one option.
Elena changes her own interpretation in response to spacing. Bruno retains the original explanation and Jo suspends judgement. Caution is not the same as adopting the revised account.
Original passage: The Orchard centre lends equipment for use on its grounds and requires its return that day. The Harbour centre permits borrowed equipment to be taken home until the next week. The Hill centre provides a demonstration but lends no equipment.
Which centre restricts a loan to its own grounds and a same-day return? Choose one option.
Orchard states both limits. Harbour permits off-site use and a later return; Hill offers no loan. Do not treat any equipment-related service as the same lending arrangement.
Transfer: reuse an option only when these directions permit it
- The community-study passage has four statements and three sites. You may use any option more than once in this task. Keep quiet study, reservations, portable loans and return conditions attached to the correct site. The passage repeats for later review but remains one shared text, not four independent passages.
- More than one statement can fit one site without describing the same feature. Do not force every option into a different question by elimination. In other matching-features tasks, follow their own reuse directions; the no-reuse rule for headings is not a general matching rule.
Original passage — three community study sites
Willow centre lends tablets for use inside the building. Borrowers return them before leaving. It has a quiet room with advance desk bookings and a separate drop-in discussion room.
Bridge centre lends tablets that users may take home for up to a week. Its quiet room uses drop-in desks without reservations. Group discussions take place in a different room.
Quarry centre has computers fixed to its desks but does not lend portable devices. It has an advance-booking room for group discussion and no designated quiet-study room.
For these four statements, you may use any option more than once. The same passage repeats for later review; it is one shared text, not four independent passages. Match each statement to the correct site.
Statement: It combines quiet study with an advance desk reservation.
Willow has the booked quiet room. Bridge is quiet but drop-in; Quarry takes bookings for group discussion, not quiet study.

Statement: It permits a portable-device loan to continue outside the building.
Bridge allows taking a tablet home for up to a week. Willow restricts tablet use to its premises; Quarry lends no portable device.

Willow requires same-visit return. Reusing Willow is allowed by these directions; a one-option-per-question elimination rule would fail. Bridge permits a longer off-site loan.
Explain why the first name can be the wrong person
- In the private repair task, name the proposer and explain the reporting frame. Show why the first named person is not automatically the source or supporter of an idea. Draft before opening the model, compare the relationships, then revise one attribution or scope error.
- Other wording can fit if it preserves the people, timing and size of the proposal. Your draft stays in this page; copy it before leaving. The checklist records self-review rather than automatic correctness, proficiency or an IELTS score.
Original passage: Lina reports that Dev proposed reserving two desks for walk-in visitors. Lina supports studying visitor demand first and has not endorsed that reservation. Omar prefers advance booking for every desk.
A reader matches “proposed keeping some desks available without advance booking” to Lina because Lina’s name appears first. Write the correct person and two sentences explaining the ownership and the nearest-name mistake. Draft before comparing the model, then revise one attribution or scope error. Your draft stays in this page; copy it before leaving.
Compare ownership and scope, not identical model wording. Recording the checklist is self-review, not automatic correctness, a proficiency judgement or an IELTS score.
Later review: a new reported proposal and a new design
- After a break, try the two fresh review passages without reopening the examples. Explain which phrase assigns the idea or combines the required features. If you were wrong, name the cause: reporter/source, earlier/current view, partial agreement, version or condition.
- For a different demand, continue with matching information to locate paragraph-level evidence, or inference and supported conclusions to check how far a claim follows. The same topic can require a different relationship and response form.
New original passage: Marta recounts Deniz’s proposal to keep the old ticket design but print it in larger type. Marta wants to compare costs before endorsing it. Louis proposes replacing the ticket with an app.
Who proposes changing the print size while keeping the design?
Deniz originates the proposal Marta reports. Marta reserves endorsement pending cost; Louis proposes a different medium. Recounting a proposal is not the same as originating it.
New original passage: The first Brook stand had a fixed height and a removable tray. The revised Brook stand adds height adjustment while keeping the removable tray. The Peak stand has an adjustable height but a fixed tray.
Which version combines adjustable height with a removable tray?
Revised Brook has both. Peak shares height adjustment but not the removable tray; First Brook shares the tray but not height adjustment. A single shared feature does not settle the match.
Keep ownership, time and scope together
- Recap: locate a candidate, read its action or view, keep its condition and time, then compare the supplied options. Features can link information to people, objects or other listed categories. A matching heading concerns a main idea; a matching-information answer concerns a paragraph location.
- Source checked on 19 October 2026: official IELTS Reading task guidance. All passages, questions and the attribution map here are originally authored teaching. Independent specialist review and learner trials remain pending; a local completion is not an official test result.
